It's ironic that based on what's revealed by later tech manuals, if they couldn't bring them back on the first try, there was nothing they could do. This wasn't an issue of not being able to rematerialize them from the transporter buffer but an issue of IF they even had complete patterns to reassemble.

As a kid who watched the original Star Trek when it was live not a rerun, this was high tech. Of course, watching it on an 8 inch screen in black and white did not help enhance the “special effects”.

So Kirk put away his communicator while they were beaming him up. This is the 2nd time he has wiped out the last member of a species simply because it was feeding. Remember the salt creature? Not to mention if there was any microbial life on that planet he wiped that out as well. No evolution for them.

Odd that the cloud creature approaches so quickly, then stop in front of them. Also, with that antimatter bomb, beamed up sooner, that explosion takes out half the planets atmosphere, certainly beaming away sooner would be as effective. But thats drama for ya!
