Does anyone know if you can propagate Agave from just the leaves you cut off? Mine doesn't have pups.

I can't recall hearing of any examples of Agaves being propagated from leaf cuttings and some species don't form pups or offsets unfortunately. Maybe someone else knows of examples or has tried this?

I have been a lifelong collector. I had my first greenhouse age 15 when I started my collection. I'm now 77, all 1500 plants all gone except for a very large Echinocactus Grusonii that I have difficulty moving . I used to specialise in the genus mammallaria because of their comparatively small size.. I've been fortunate to visit many varieties in their natural habitat in Utah, New Mexico, Arizona and Mexico since 1982 on my travels whilst hiking and camping. Memories that cannot be eraised.

Thanks. When we visiting an area, we always look to see if there are any interesting Gardens or Collections nearby to visit. I think you have got a better chance of getting your back garden like a botanical garden than we have. It's been very wet here recently and is getting colder but there are some succulents outside the greenhouses which may make it into a video next year...

Interesting video. I have the same but slightly larger plant due for repotting. I was thinking of devising some or other tripod hoist setup where one wraps something around the lower portion of the bowl to spread the weight, lifts it out of the old pot and suspends it over the new pot, slowly lowering it once the new pot has been prepared. These cacti can become extremely heavy, not to mention the rigid and sharp spines.

@thepricklypair5254

Our video Succulent Seed Sowing 2018 shows a bit more of the preparation and sowing of seeds. For soil we use a mix of John Innes seed compost and sharp sand roughly 50:50 mix. Small seeds are just left on the surface, larger ones like the opuntia seeds in the video are covered with a thin layer of soil. But we still experience a lot of trial and error each year with different species!

What should I do,if I want save seeds for next year....it's very difficult to open these capsules by hand
@thepricklypair5254
@thepricklypair5254 4 жыл бұрын
it probably depends on the type of mesemb. For this one I would get a bit of water on the capsule, carefully scrape out the seeds when it opens, put them on kitchen paper to dry off and then store them in a paper envelope until ready for sowing. This probably would be more tricky was smaller dust like seeds.

Fun video. I'm wondering if there's something more natural to use than polystyrene that won't be floating round the garden for years to come.
@thepricklypair5254
@thepricklypair5254 4 жыл бұрын
Glad you liked it. Expanded polystyrene just goes into landfill in our area as they don't recycle it, so my feeling was that at least the old packaging was doing a useful job of adding drainage and also being low density means it won't add to the considerable weight of the plant and soil when I need to move it.

Thank you for going to the trouble to share this, I'm ashamed it's taken me until now to watch it ! Have to say the geogpaphical maps with information in perspex stands are brilliant. I've sat through so many shows where you just know the classes mean absolutely nothing to the casual observer, and they really appreciate when you can talk them through what it all means, but as volunteers at these events there often just isn't enough people to go around.to do this. Thank you again.

We've been quite carried away with seed sowing the last couple of years and would run out of pots and space if we did them all individually, as it is a lot of the trays are on the floor in the middle of the greenhouse rather than on the benches.

I'm just wondering if, when tackling a sturdy, heavy plant, with spines and spikes, whether it wouldn't be advisable to, like, you know... wear gloves...? The other thing which would make it easier, is to soak the root ball THOROUGHLY for anything up to 24 hours. First of all, the plant won't suffer. Secondly, it would be much easier to disentangle all the roots and pups... Once you've managed to dislodge the majority of the soil, and have cleaned up the roots, cutting away dead matter, and separated the pups, you then leave the roots to dry overnight, and re-pot the following day. (You can tell I've done this myself, can't you?)
@thepricklypair5254
@thepricklypair5254 5 жыл бұрын
I use gloves sometimes, particularly with the large cacti (and all opuntias!) but sometimes find they can be a bit cumbersome when trying to get soil down the sides of the pot easily and not all over the floor! Sounds like you've got some good sized plants yourself - thanks for the tips!
@1ilgrillo
@1ilgrillo 4 жыл бұрын
Dear Prickly Pear, Thank you for putting this video together. It tells me a lot about Agaves. Your answer to this person about the use of gloves also tells me that you are a person of infinite wisdom and patience and that you are or should have been a major player in the arena of international diplomatic relations. If I had to reply to such a snotty piece of prose, I would have gone, you know,,like,,,,,, bats#@it? (note that I am using the question mark at the end as I cannot imagine it being verbalized any other way.)
