My Grandfather was one of The Composers of this Song. While He was alive he received Holiday Cards from Jerry Lee & Elvis who loved My Grandfather's Musical Compositions. I just want to give my Late-Grandfather the Recognition that He Truly Deserves as a Co-Composer of This Song. I honestly believe that the Musical Score Sounds Like My Granddaddy's Work therefore, I believe that He was the Writer Of The Music. I'm writing this on The Date just after My Grandfather's Birthday & Death-Date on October 24th, 2022. In fact I just heard that presumably, late yesterday, October 28th, 2022, Jerry Lee Lewis passed away after battling a number of illnesses in recent years at The Age of 87.

Jerry Lee Lewis and a gospel song. Now there is a non sequitur if there ever was one.

I sure hope he makes it to that city. Don’t mean that in a bad judge mental way. Just don’t get there by singing about it. Only through Jesus Christ. I’m not a saint.

I don't miss the backing singers 1 iota thus lifting Jerry's piano up in the mix after all these years. Thanks again JB!

In this instance, the abscence of the background singers is a real blessing :-) Jerry carries the weight of the song just fine without any help from anybody else. They were actually distracting, and irritating to listen to I thought. So, thanks for helping this one out - it needed it bad!

Interesting to listen to, but I still think Shelby Singleton and Jerry Kennedy were correct in adding the background singers. In it's day, this was a really hip and rocking song. The rhythm is so fast, I bet the session guitar player had a cramp in his arm and wrist before it was over, LOL!

I actually like the original version of this better. The mix was decent enough to where the background singers weren't drowning him out, and I think they added to the Gospel feel of the song. Without them, it just seems to lie there flat, and not give you goosebumps, like it did me as a 19 year old when it came out.

We agree a lot my friend- and I feel your comments are spot on. I was a bit older than 19 when I first heard this for the first time- and like you, it was so powerful!

I always appreciate when fans try to offer a different mix, for other fans. I don’t suppose Jerry’s former record labels are rushing to see what’s locked away in the archives. I would love a stripped back mix of The Killer Rocks On’ with the strings and choir backed off, significantly, official or non-official !

@@LEEFORDJAGG I can agree heartily with you on that one. That was clear abuse of strings and background vocals on The Killer Rocks On. I wonder what it would sound like if they recorded a strong new band on some of his tracks, like they did on Elvis' Memphis cuts?

@@hbbeverly Do you mean like the posthumous ‘Guitar Man’ album in the early ‘80’s, on Elvis? I wouldn’t mind a different approach.I believe though the core band are pretty damn hot, especially Buddy Harman is great throughout.. The Strings and Choir get in the way of Jerry’s Piano. I would be tempted to leave the Choir out altogether, until Jerry says “sing it children”.Whether the Unmixed master tapes are in decent enough condition to work from them is one issue. I guess the engineers would have to bake the tape and digitise it asap. Then their is the projected sales bottom line. I avoided the Buddy Holly-London Philharmonic cd. If they had had a stab at ‘ What To Do’ I might have shelled out, but overdubbing over Joe B & J.I .. no blinking way..

Jerry Lee is the best and here he mixes blues, gospel and country. He is the master of US music and also so popular in Northern Ireland, UK, Czech Republic and Germany. I am from Republic of Ireland and also everyone here loves him too and he should be more promoted here.
