Our 1954 GMC 530 Fire Engine's chassis used the 503. Very dependable engines.

It’s funny how the ford 300 is considered the biggest i6 and GMC made 5 or 6 bigger ones including the 503 which is almost double a 300.

Completely different ballpark/category, But you’re not wrong about Ford’s 300 not being the biggest. It was actually GMC’s 302 that was the biggest mass produced inline 6 engine for the “pickup truck” market. The 503’s were mainly used for the biggest medium duty applications, or mainly tractor trailers running local or for OTR use. If you wanna talk about large displacement Gas inlines, then the 503 pales in comparison to the other options.

My dad had a 950 jimmy, with the 503. We hauled all over the usa with. Was strong and reliable.
