I was, very much looking forward to this lecture, which was completely ruined by the sound quality. I lasted about 2 minutes before the venue's acoustics defeated me. Shame.

This is an informative and engaging talk, thank you for posting. I just have to point out that at 28:00 that student fees are not a great example for illustrating why the government cutting taxes below the budget was unsuccessful. Universities are paid for by tax revenue and fees only become neccessary when the government doesn’t have the will to fund them, recently due to an aggressive attack on public goods. A better example is perhaps simply cutting taxes below the point where they can support the structures of the state, which continues to be relevant today.

This is the first talk I’ve listened to about Oliver Cromwell ever and I was not expecting all of those well-placed pop culture references to liven-up the subject matter without trivialising it. Cool! Though wow this was weeks before the first lockdown and I hope that chest infection wasn’t COVID. 😢

Ronald Hutton - just the right combination of historian and dramatist - history comes alive in his presentations. No pauses, no gaps, a smooth flow of articulation from start to finish.

Always found details of history in school difficult as a boy. Would have been quite different if we had lecturers such as prof Ronald Hutton. Really enjoyed this lecture.

This is a harsh appraisal of Cromwell, but I think it makes the case he was the first truly modern British politician, even more deserving of that title than Walpole.

Couldn’t agree more! The Irish have a lot to answer for…At Drogheda those vanquished were mainly of the English Royalists and their Irish supporters…As for the following years, how come the Scottish Stewarts of James II, the Old Pretender and the Young Pretender all funded by France, came very nearly to gain the day before ´king Billy’ and the outcome of the Battle of the Boyne? Had James II succeeded, and England, Scotland and Wales been subjected oh once again Bloody Mary, burn all except the Irish to your hearts content…!

What a stud, I can listen to Hutton talk all day. It's the clear distinction that he is equal parts historian and psychologist that REALLY sets him apart from your garden variety run-of-the-mill historian. Debt to the dead paid in full chap. Bravo

Hi Haydn, remember the time we holed up inside your house for an entire day and a bit to watch Jerry Seinfeld? Sorry to see it all coming to an end. There are no words for describing such losses in life. We are forced to move on and create new and positive memories without forgetting the old ones. As you know ...I'm experiencing my own losses these days, but I'm left with 2 wonderful children who are old enough to stand on their own feet, thank God!

Hi Rudi. All very true in what you say. Wanted to put some record on the loss of Cuthbury, Close. A big part in my life growing up. Was tough watching but glad I recorded the end of, was there at the begining. Thoughts with my friend on your recent loss my friend.
