I agree with all the comments below. I'm an American and grew up with the 80's new wave music in America. However, to hear how the Vietnamese adopted and ripped off the Euro Italo disco music scene, and called it their new wave sound. Sounds like their need to use the Diaspora story is an excuse to own music, which is not theirs. I guess the Vietnamese are not creative enough to create their own sound, so to claim someone else's work as their own is repugnant and straight-out despicable.

I have to agree with June & Beth. I was born in Los Angeles Ca., brought up listening to 80s new wave music on FM radio stations every day. So, trying to convince any American new wave fan of the '80s music, that the Vietnamese New Wave is also the same is a joke! I remember when a Vietnamese friend shared his collection of Vietnamese new wave songs with me. My first thought was, " What the heck is this?", he replied, "New Wave". This really confused me. So, we argued for a while only to learn that what he was calling new wave, was actually Euro Disco and Italo disco. And the word Disco for a hard-core new wave musician in American was an insult.

Doesn't this interview come off somewhat pretentious? LOL! This primadonna (Elizabeth AI) is very articulate, although filled with self-inflating fantasies to the reality of her own culture. I also find her obtuse, particularly when explaining the polarity in her conflicting title, New Wave. Sad!

Perhaps to stop all the ambiguity and confusion to explain why the Vietnamese are calling Euro disco, New Wave is to call it for what it is, Euro disco!. Otherwise the contradiction in using that genre of the New Wave title displays a false narrative. I love the '80s, although it's so sad that the Vietnamese got this so wrong!

Hello Beth. I agree with you. The person being interviewed seems to be struggling. LOL! What I find so hilarious is how this Euro into new wave got so diluted? And the need to conjugate the Vietnam war is a crutch to the Vietnamese Americans suffering. Who? The teens? WOW! And then to say, that New wave saved the Vietnamese from their trauma of the war. I don't think so! Ask any teen who was or into Euro disco, or even New Wave is not worried about that subject. Maybe they should relax. It's not so psychological or traumatizing as they make it to be. Perhaps, this documentary their making should have a different name. Like Vietnamese Euro disco. Just to cut through the confusion of their title.
