I would not recommend the mica heater as the power cord gets hot and if you fall asleep or forget to turn it off the wall outlet wiring will catch fire and burn off the insulation causing a short circuit or worse. Check the mica heater power cord against heating up and if it gets hot turn off the Mica Heater and remove power cord from wall outlet. Never use an extension cord. God bless everyone to stay warm & safe.

I know the video is 6 years old now but I've been seeing a lot of these other kind of heaters popping up around here but I'm not sure what they're called in english. what we call them directly translates to "thermal emitters". one example would be the "orbegozo RRW 1500". I've seen people claiming on review comments that they're very effective as they usually come with a control pad with programable temperature and timers and turn on/off as needed to maintain that temperature and work by convection+radiation. I wonder if it would be better or about the same as what a mica heater does in terms of how fast it can heat a room thus turning off more often or for longer periods resulting in not so much electricity consumption in the end. I was also looking at a mica heater with programable temperature and wondering what would be best option🙂 those "thermal emitters" are quite pricey tho...

I work as a professional auto technician and now I am wondering if my diagnosis was off . Had the same type vehicle come in for a oil change and good old Murphy showed it face by taking down the cluster right when I went to pull the car out . I checked the fuse also and it was good so I pulled the cluster and installed another one . Well it was free anyway out of customer courtesy. lol

Would not adding %10-%15 humidity also help? We bitch about it in the summer. Why not use it in the winter? And I prefer the sonic ones because they don't add any additional heat.

Space heaters can only draw up to 1500 WATS So a $20 heater is just as good as a $100 heater.

You didn't mention the heat dish, radiant space heater. The ones I have are nearly 8 and 5 yrs old, and both have 3 settings, low, medium and high, and having an old house with old wiring, i can run both at the same time and not trip off the breaker. They are very reliable. It is also silent and quite beautiful to see the orange light up a room, reminiscent of a nice fire place. The heat is quite warm, within seconds, so can turn it to high to heat up a cold room quickly, and then back to low. For the bedroom/study, this is my number one choice. Also it does not drive up the electric bill. I have used the oil radiator type, the ceramic heater with fan, and several other types, but all will trip the breaker. The price of the radiant heaters are go up every year, and losing features which i consider important. Cleaning the dust off the dish is important at the beginning of the cold season, and just use a "swifter" which cleans between the metal tines easily. Typically i wear enough clothes to stay warm; I bought a battery heated vest ( half off ) just before Thanksgiving and find it to provide fantastic heat, though sometimes it gets way too hot. I would love to find some heavy duty leg warmers that don't cost an arm and a leg. If anyone knows where to find them, let me know. I am worried about staying cool in the summer; i live in the south eastern part of usa every summer dealing with dangerously hot and humid environment, inside and out.

Use two or more of these for an entire Winter month, then check your next electric bill and its SURCHARGE. Don't worry, the utility company will happily spread out the surcharge payments over multiple months.

Good video, lots of useful points. My infra red doesn’t have a fan, so it’s quieter than the oil because the oil pops as it heats up.

But infra red works differently and I find my infra red 350w heater to be as warm (and much more pleasant) than an oil radiator (700w) and a fan heater that was 1500w. Of course with the fan heater it switches off and only comes on every few minutes so it’s not constantly using 1500w, but it’s not as pleasant a heat, and it’s noisy. My infra red heater is brilliant honestly. Though if it’s really cold it’s good to have a short blast from the fan heater to warm up the edges of the room, but sit in front of the infra red for a toasty cosy feeling. The oil radiator is least useful, it’s no where near as warm for the same wattage as the infra red (infra red works differently! Warming up the objects instead), but the oil is mainly quiet (except for the pops whilst the oil is heating up). I don’t use it though because the fan heater is quicker and warms up the air then turns off, conserving energy. And the infra red is just way better than it. The other good thing about the infra red heater is that it’s a dry heat, so it’s anti mould and because it’s some of the same wavelengths as in open fires or the sun. it feels very comforting on the skin. Though it does get very hot right in front of it which is something to be aware of. Only costs ten pence an hour to run, which is incredible (350w an hour) 🥳 I know I sound evangelical, but after trying all three I’m SO glad I found it.

We have a wood burner and when you use it right it heats the entire house. If the family is over and we are cooking and that is running, it gets so warm inside that we have to open the door, and that is without using utilities. Otherwise, I use it as supplemental. Afternoons and evenings get the fire, getting it built up really good before bed. I sleep with my door shut to keep the warm air out, otherwise its too warm. Got low on wood this year for the first time in 2 decades AND the furnace broke down. We used the wood burner and 2 oil filled running at 50% and I was more than comfortable until the furnace got fixed, but I hated using them. Otherwise, utilities for temp maintenance and wood burner for the additional. Thats more than enough. Especially if I am using the oven. Of course its all a trade off. That wood was mostly free. As in, no cost directly. But I did have to cut it to haul it, load it, haul it, unload it, split it, stack it, get it seasoned and keep inside stocked with wood. And there is a lot of ash. A lot. I mix the ash with concrete, dig holes in my stone drive and fill it in with that and then back fill. Otherwise, I dont know what I would do with the roughly 20 gallons of ash we produce each week. All that takes time and energy, so if time and energy is where your value is, wood burners are much more expensive than space heaters. I think for most, the happy medium is just using utilities and being smart. I strategically use my oven, for example.

Sorry. but your comparison of mica to ceramic for efficiency of initial heating was flawed. Turn the ceramic heater all the wsy up as you did with the mica. Obviously the ceramic will be better on full than half. Whether its better than the mica would have to be tested.

i think 60£ oer year isnt that much, a better metric would be per month as usually thats how we manage our money, i am aware some people manages weekly, but anyway 15£ per month is good price, i have gas powered central heating and using 4 radiators for about 4 hours a day averages 300£ a month.... i was outraged.

Thanks so much for your hard work. I’m still having a tough time making a decision. I need a space heater for a 300’ guesthouse and want to make sure the heater won’t trip the circuit breaker. It’s one of those situations where if the microwave and heater are operating simultaneously, it sometimes trips the circuit. I’ve used an oil-filled heater with success, but replaced it with two smaller ceramic tower heaters. But they don’t seem to be enough. The operating cost isn’t the biggest factor.

These types of heaters are the worst way to heat. If it's all feasible, get a mini-split with a heat pump in it. My first winter with mine has been fantastic for both me and my electric bill. Granted it hasn't been super cold this year, so take that for what it's worth. I would suppose a window unit with a heat pump works as well, but I won't comment without trying one first. All I can say is that my min-split is heating an entire room to a comfortable temp, for the same ballpark of money that I spent freezing to death with a normal electric heater. And that's with me running it for longer periods of time.

I think people saying all 1500-watt heaters put out exactly the same amount of heat are mistaken. While the wattage may be the same, some will not run as long since they shut off when the set temperature is reached. A tiny 1500-watt heater isn't going to heat up a room like one with larger heating elements. Or, are you saying a 1500-watt hair dryer will heat a room as well as a heater? Cooling and heating are also affected by the movement of air. Superior circulation of heat will provide higher overall efficiency. A radiant heater with a good fan will heat a room faster than one without a fan. Although that tiny little heater may be using the same 1500 watts, if it has smaller elements and a weak fan, it is not going to heat up a room as quickly as a larger well-designed fan. Also, the National Electric Code limits continuous loads to use only up to 80% of a circuit’s total capacity. A 1,500-watt load will draw 12.5 amps at 120 volts, which is a little over 80% of the available 15 amps. Only non-continuous loads like hairdryers are permitted to utilize the full capacity of the circuit. And please, if you still believe this, tell a contractor who works outdoors in the winter, that a 5" cube radiant heater will keep them just as warm as that large outdoor heat blower they use because both are 1500 watts.

I use along with a carbon monoxide detector a Mr. Heater portable buddy propane heater with a 1 lb tank. It works for me. On the low setting it’s on for about 2.5 - 3 hours. It states on the box safe for indoor use. I only use it in my room and never overnight. I refill the 1 lb tank from a 20 tank outside. I’m not using it for hours on end.
