I just saw a documentary about the hells angels this dude Sonny. They said he was a mean mean man. Pretty much a POS Seeing this concert with Rolling Stones would have been epic. Then comes a mean piece of shit making it seem like it wasn’t

The angels parked their bikes inbetween the stage and a pushing crowd so obviously their bikes were going to get knocked over, which is most likely the excuse some of them were waiting for. Why else show up with sawn-off pool cues? You've got 2 extremes of society, and one is policing the other. Obviously it was going to end badly. The stones themselves were used to riots at their shows from the early years so im not surprised they went out and faced it. But never build a stage less than 15 feet off the ground for a gig like this and don't pay the security with beer. To be fair to the hells angels, some of them seemed to be doing a good job, but in every gang in every sub-group of society, there's always a % of psychos, and that goes for the drugged-up hippies too. The film Gimme Shelter leaves people to assume blame for hiring the HA lies with the stones but other people think the grateful dead and/or Jefferson Airplane could be responsible for that since there were HA in and around Haight Ashbury at that time looking to get in on the action.

Beyond beautiful. I’m so happy this was filmed, because she was utterly exceptional, what a dancer. Best flamenco I’ve seen and I’ve seen a fair few.

Sonny Barger was the best and worst thing to happen to Hells Angels. George Christie shoulda took over. Or sonny faded to the rear view. He was a bad coke head. George truly cared about the brotherhood in the club first and foremost. Sunny wanted to retain power and continue using coke not sharing with a Club royalties from his movies and stuff. Sunny was in it for Sunny.

This is actually a really interesting cultural moment- Barger (CEO of the Angels) calling in and giving Jagger (CEO of counterculture) his perspective on what has proved a major historical clash/event. That the Maysles let Charlie Watts own the scene is genius.

Like John Lennon, I don't think the Rolling Stones had a grasp of violence on an American level. Many have said had Lennon stayed in Europe, he'd still be alive and I agree. I think Jagger looked at the Angels as sort of cartoon characters not having a clue as to what they and this country is really capable of.

I think hiring the HA was the best thing they did the man with the gun could have shot anyone on stage or in the crowd and the HA stopped that from happening so whats the issue I mean the crowd was out of hand they did a swell job in my opinion

The bikers were not the Hell's Angles, they were actually the Dike's On Bikes gang of lesbian women dress up as men bikers. The Rolling Stones made a deal with Dike's On Bikes to run security that night for 200 cases of Kotex Tampons

You get a bunch of Hells Angels on Methamphetamine to work security in your concert, you got a mob of hundreds of intoxicated hippies ... what did you think would happen? People back in the 60's were crazy. I'm surprised only 4 people died, we should be happy it wasn't a total bloodbath.

Hell's Angel's are tweeker pieces of shit always were and still are! People who can't create just destroy, most people in "motorcycle clubs" loser who contribute nothing to society! And people say oh they do toy drives and donate to less fortunate kids but they sell drugs to the parents of kids too, so F*ck them!

What didn't help at Altamont was the stage was only 3 feet high with no restricted distance from the crowd. The crowd were right at the edge of the stage where you could reach ot and touch Mick Jagger in fact one girl even reached her arms out to him. So the tension of people budding infront of one another to get a close look got tense. Just look, you can even see many moments of guys and chicks nudging each other to get close to the stage and space was too tight! No wonder things got out if controll. Also, during Jefferson Airplane, they stopped their show too because some ruckus started in the crowd and some guy got pulled away and one of the Hells punched out their bass player who also argued with the guitarist! The whole Altamont show was a poorly planned show worse than Woodstock!

The dvd shows everything…warts and all… I have the anniversary version…same as Woodstock had horrible moments..one story they had bulldozers cleaning the garbage away and all garbage bags, one young kid had wrapped himself in a bag the nite before and wad still sleeping on the ground (it rained most of that weekend) the bulldozers got him…after the fact when it was figured out, it turned out the kid was the son of one of the police working Woodstock..there’s a book..stories from Woodstock…all people who attended..the policeman told his story

When you read Stanley Booth's book about the '69 tour, you get a good portrait of Charlie, and his role in the band. Such a vital part of the Stones, but Altamont happened for a lot of bad reasons, none having to do with Charlie. Anyway, a giant among drummers is dead today. We love you, Chollie.
