Not many clubs can offer what Geelong can offer to players and also workers. Beach life, city life and country life. Think more people are jealous of the location on where the city of geelong is. Great ocean road is a stone throw away and you dont have to drive far out to hit a farm. Haters seem to forget that geelong isn't apart of Melbourne and cry home ground advantage all the time. Now i know why Melbourne people kept voting Dan Andrews in. How left are they all?

Don't make a KZbin video with a question you didn't answer. To answer your question, it depends on how they set up their players from year one: will it be a GC or GWS model where they have access to quality draft picks, or will it be a Brisbane Bears model where you were given draft picks to trade only. Or will there be an Academy to get the best players farmed out on loan to other clubs that will eventually play for the Devils. Time will tell Time will tell.

"Geelong are looked after by the State Government". As opposed to the interstate clubs who are looked after by the AFL and given academies, millions poured into promoting them, favourable draft concessions, COLA, favourable umpiring , and other perks non-football states get. Or what about the rich Victorian sides like Carlton, Collingwood, Richmond etc that the AFL kiss on the dick?Get guaranteed "double ups" in fixtures via blockbuster games, so those teams can scoop the money off the top twice and the rich remain richer.

The biggest complainers of Geelong's GMHBA stadium advantage are Richmond, Collingwood and Hawthorn (who play more home games at their home, the MCG, than Geelong play at GMHBA, as well as those teams getting away games at the MCG as well and never even play us at GMHBA because they will throw a tantrum to the AFL of forced to) and interstate teams who get 11 home games and even an extra away in their home state for derbies, showdowns etc. The SA clubs even get an extra home game during Gather Round. Cry harder!

Maybe Geelong have proven that drafting a team of 18 years old and sacrificing their present for a possible flag in the future, is a farce. Geelong always put themselves in contention while others go rebuild and fail. Name me one team who has won a flag completely building through the draft.

@@stevemurrell6167 As opposed to the Swans who had COLA and now have academies? Sydney have been there 42 years. Time to stand on your own two feet. Cut off all concessions. No academies, no COLA, nothing. Draft and trade like everyone else. Brisbane got the pick of the best 8 Fitzroy players and have a big home ground advantage. Sydney and Brisbane get more home games at their ground then Geelong do. Geelong missed out on Errol Gulden in the draft because Sydney was allowed to match our bid because he was in their Academy. What a rort? Talk about the AFL kissing the Swans on the dick. They got Buddy because of the COLA payment. If you go for any of the 15 other sides, you weren't good enough to get there, so shut your hole.

@dhenderson1810 Ай бұрын
"Most pampered"? Interstate teams get academies, guaranteed 11 home and 1 away game in their home state, favourable draft hands, AFL pouring millions into them, favourable home umpiring, COLA, etc. Carlton, Collingwood, Hawthorn, Richmond, etc get about 2 interstate games a year (as opposed to Geelong, who get 5, including one in Tassie), play most games on the MCG, get favourable draws and guaranteed "blockbuster" games where the rich teams get two shots at making more money, and they are allowed to never play Geelong at GMHBA stadium. The AFL has done little for Geelong actually. If you are complaining, maybe your club isn't kissed on the dick by the AFL like the interstate and rich Victorian clubs are.

I think the most overhyped thing that people consider to be a huge advantage is the ground. The club no longer owns the ground - there is now a trust that operates the ground. The more common thing that people think is that Geelong's ground is an unfair advantage because they never lose there, which is far from true. The Cats simply win everywhere - sure, they'd have a higher winning percentage at home compared to interstate which would be across the board, but they also lose just as regularly at home when they aren't travelling well - this year being a perfect example. Add in that they will generally play the teams that draw lower crowds (aren't going so well) or interstate clubs there - that will bolster winning percentage too. Play another Victorian club that's flying and you get to play your home game at their home ground. Do they have a home ground advantage? Sure. Is it as big as what people think? Not even close.

The resurgence started in 1999 when Brian Cook arrived. He had an affection for the club but thought they were filled with good people who accepted not winning flags. He identified Kardinia Park as a substandard venue and put in place a plan to completely redevelop the ground. Everything you hear about government handouts took well over two decades to fulfil as there was never money to develop it in one go and Geelong was broke. For years the Cats only played 6 -7 home games opting to play at Docklands and the G for big ticket opportunities and to accommodate the Melbourne fan base. The Cats made their first prelim in 2004 losing to the Lions after being ahead most of the night. In the 2005 finals they lost to the Swans in a last kick heartbreaker again after leading most of the night. Our on field turnaround had a lot to do with Mark Thompson and the fantastic assistants he assembled including Ken Hinkley who had a big hand in changing their game style. I think it is Brian Cook's legacy in transforming the organisation which has carried through to this day under the shrewd succession of Steve Hocking. Geelong have always wanted to be different and play an attractive brand of football and moreover innovate in key areas to develop a sustainable competitive advantage as we are seeing today with their community involvement, recruitment and development program.Success take enormous dedication and perseverance and there is no easy path to follow but the Cats have found an identity that we hope continues.

Was actually Frank Costa that brought cook over. Made a dint in the debt. On the field the moment was the famous Leon Davis goal was the switch of believing they were good enough. In 2006 was the final piece in the culture of Geelong today. Players took pay cuts to keep the team together and the famous players meeting of criticism. Next year they finally break the premiership drought of 60 plus years. The stadium is the house that Frank built. Great business man and even better president.

They get extra favourable umpires decisions, especially at home games. Being the only Victorian team left in the finals will also help them. The AFL make sure of that.
@geelongvideoguy5840
@geelongvideoguy5840 Ай бұрын
It is written in the AFL constitution that Geelong get special treatment as they are the second oldest club in the world, and an exception was granted back in the days of the Gold Rush when Melbourne beat Geelong to be the capital of Victoria and compensation was needed. Umpires also have a separate rule book when handling Geelong games. Some of the rules are top secret and not able to be shared but astute followers of football can spot them in an instant. It is no coincidence that ex Geelong people are on the rules of the game committee that favours their style of play. When players are recruited to Geelong they get a house in Armstrong Creek and a surfboard from Quicksilver or Rip Curl as well as a modelling contract with Cotton On all of which is not included in the salary cap. Geelong get government money to build a stadium and keep the profits but can only do so if they develop community programs and essentially not build Pokies venues to exploit poor people with too much time on their hands.

Back in 2006, after Geelong missed the finals, the Cats had a well publicised review. Players, all players critiqued each other,..Gary Ablett jnr. was told he didnt train hard enough and that if he did he could be as good as Judd. Scarlett bluntly told his team mates 'you blokes aren't as good as you think you are''. No player was spared and this review is probably the day Geelong's envied culture began. The players woke up from their slumber. It was also at about the same time president Frank Costa and CEO Brian Cook put their heads together and planned the resurgence of Geelong F.C. and 2007 was the year it all fell into place culminating in that drought breaking premiership. 2007 was also the debut year of two young kids, Joel Selwood and Tom Hawkins. Joel was talented enough to be part of that premiership team and Tom Hawkins was soaking it all in. That culture has been passed down to this day. Tom Hawkins, three flags to his name, might not get the chance for a fourth if the Cats are good enough to beat Brisbane next Saturday, but you can guarantee if he doesnt get a spot in the team he will be down in the rooms motivating the boys, especially the Grand Final debutants and thats what that football team is about,..all for one, and one for all. Good time to be a Cats fan and win or lose in the next week and a bit, youll be certain the Cats will give it their best shot as they always have.

As a slightly older Geelong supporter I feel blessed that my dad indoctrinated me as a little kid. I don't take anything for granted. I remember walking out of the 1995 GF disaster convinced I would never see a premiership. Being physically present at 4 losing GFs scarred me for life. Even now, I never go in confident, and have a deep gratitude for everything the club has become. I remember in the late 90s, when we were on our knees financially, and were a real chance to go under. We were offered the life-rope of going to the docklands, just as the dogs, bombers, blues and saints were, but the club didn't buckle, even though at the time it would have been the easy way out. We were lucky to have some good people to guide us through that dark period. And in the end it is luck. Luck that those people came through in our time of need with the right selfless attitude to set the club up for the next 20+ years. You could absolutely imagine an alternate future where it all went the other way. And for that I'm forever grateful. The thing I'm most proud about the club is that we (at least from my perspective) are humble in what we've created. We don't make waves and we respect the opposition. There's nothing to celebrate if you win without humility.
