As a long time admirer I found this gender change abominable, actually disgusting. Never again Cecilia! Enjoy your Illuminati status.

y'all commenters missed the point. this production is amazing. some directors bend the opera's text to match their vision. Clément masterfully weaves her vision into the text as it stands. I think I counted 2, maybe 3 parts where the text was slightly altered. Have any of you seen the actually terrible productions that butcher the edit? Clément's staging here is so intricate I can't imagine how many hours she must have spent working on it before it even got to rehearsals. Somehow she manages to, word by word, match the stage action to the existing libretto. Antonia's act in particular blows my mind with how seamlessly the scene fluctuates between Hoffmann's film and the real-life happenings of the actors and crew. Plus the commentary on addiction and how it affects not only one's art but one's relationships and entire life is heart-wrenching. And her understanding and honoring of the Hoffmann/Nicklausse relationship is amazing (and, frankly, after the travesty that was the 2003 production, cathartic. Want to talk about a fundamental misunderstanding of this piece? Go watch that one). And somehow making all the heroines flow beautifully into one person who is not only multi-faceted and sympathetic but also takes over in a way I haven't seen before? The end of Act III (Giulietta) obliterated me. This production is a love letter to anyone who's ever struggled in their art career, survived alcoholism/addiction, devoted themself to caring for someone who struggles with addiction, or had to let go of something they love to pursue what they really need. I know regie productions are hard and everyone's entitled to their own opinion, but once and a while can we let people try something new? If you want every production to look like that one Royal Opera House production, just watch that. One of the coolest things about art (as Hoffmann, the artist, could attest) is how it can be interpreted and adapted to see what new things come of it. There are some truly terrible productions of this opera out there, that butcher the text or music, throw the weirdest things in our faces, misinterpret the text, or manufacture things simply for shock value. This production does none of that. It's a thoughtful, intricate, loving retelling of the story. Brava Clément and bravi to the entire cast and crew of this amazing production. I'm never going to stop talking about it.

Ha!

Damn, I watched the production... I never was Warłikowski's fan, but this is actually really good. No scandalous and mindless details, good symbolism and character traits shown. A bit overdone with Lebedev, who's almost too demonic... But that's not bad at all, just my take on the production

Such a traumatizing and disgusting production to look at. As a Mozart geek, I’d like to think that Mozart himself is rolling in his grave at productions such as this. Bayreuth equivalent-bad if you ask me.🤮
