Sorry to hear that. Have you tried e-readers that have low light and try to be similar to looking at a paper page? Also, if you're reading on your phone you can put on night shift mode to make the screen red-tint (to lower the blue light that hurts our eyes).

Very interesting commentary. I think you nailed it. However, please take your glasses off or get a pair that fits. You’re constantly adjusting them and it’s very distracting.

@@my0.25lifecrisis Yeah, Being Mortal is such an important book because unfortunately when it comes to nursing homes, end-of-life care, etc. choices are made that make the living people feel better, not the person who is aging/dying.

I do not really know a lot about the books you talk about. Just about Life of Pi and The Hunger Games because I watched the movies. Because I am mexican I just read mostly latinamerican authors. Pachinko has been on my list for quite a while but it has been quite difficult to get ahold of a copy. About the list is very obvious almost all recomendations are english written books, because they were selected by an english speaking jury. But, i would have loved to have more books from around the world. With that said I love the latinamerican representation with Fernanda Melchor and Roberto Bolaño. I would have also included Liliana's Invincible Summer by Cristina Rivera Garza and Our Share of Night by Mariana Enriquez.

Best drunken book review! I liked the weird world of 1Q84. I did not like 1984 where your hopes and dreams d!e (which was the point). I put random books on the waiting list after seeing stuff on BookTok. By the time I get it from the library, I have no idea what I'm about to read. But after Aomame took the stairs, I thought, "is that going to be like Chihiro going through the door in Spirited Away?" Not knowing what it was about, and not expecting any explanation helped in my case. But repeats should've been edited out. I'm paraphrasing, but Murakami would write, "Tengo cooked while waiting for the phone call." Then he'd describe the cooking process, and then; "Tengo ate the food before the editor called." Yes, you already said Tengo was waiting. I feel some 300 pages could have been shaved off. Because of the length, I felt like Aomame at the end; "I can't go through 1157 pages again, so I'm just going to call this world home. Forget the mirrored tiger." Many books inevitably blur together. Not this one! This is a genre of its own. I might have to look for something similarly odd.

💡 Have stay-at-home jobs. Be a painter. Be a writer. Work over the phone. Work on the computer. Have family members rotate who is seen in public, e.g. when shopping. Have it be Alice for 5-6 years. Shift to Edward for 5-6 years. Have the dad do it for 20 years but add in a touch of grey to his hair. I forget who else is in the family. Once each family member has had a turn ~50 years would've passed. Restart the rotations with Alice. Anyone who sees her would've seen her 50 years ago and might think it's a granddaughter or something if in the extremely unlikely change they recognize her.

I was thinking of revisiting Moby Dick, for at least one chapter where he describes a painting in a bar, of a whale (IIRC) and it launches him into a discussion of whaling. And I believe he kind of blends looking over the painting in an interesting way with the narration so it doesn't seem boring or just like he's giving exposition, but it's more interesting and engaging. Also, the chapter about the blacksmith and the anvil making his harpoon, probably about half-way through, is AH-MA-ZING.

I like listening to this just to hear how bad it is. Out of curiosity, is there any story that shows Edward's origins? I think that'd be more interesting than simply having Twilight from his POV.
@kellyseeksbooks
@kellyseeksbooks 4 ай бұрын
He shares a bit of his backstory with Bella in the original series, but as far as I know, there isn't a full story out there on it. He nearly died of Spanish Influenza in 1918, got turned into a vampire by Carlisle, and then killed murderers and rapists for their blood until he went "vegetarian."
