The issue with your argument is the environment you're in is far closer to how humanity has lived for tens of thousands of years. The average poor person is locked into societys system, and poverty keeps them trapped. I'd be happy and fulfilled living in a large forest being able to do whatever i wanted too, but I'm stuck in a 9-5 with debt, poverty and surrounded by drug\alcohol abuse\ crime

I understand, and I have found happiness in ranching. But for people like Elon, happiness is in solving problems. Going to Mars is a incredibly complex problem. Actually that task is a compilation of millions of problems. It is the ultimate in survival problems like natural building techniques. His happiness will be in solving those problems and the journey.
