my former manager (female, head of division) used to complain a lot about glass ceiling and how she was not promoted because she is a female. But in fact she simply was a bad manager. I left my job because of her and her chaotic management style. I perfectly understand why she never was promoted and her gender has nothing to do with it. I am female as well and I am over 55 but I found a new job without any problems and am happy now. I had seen many females in top positions and they were talented and strong. Those who are not promoted should first of all ask themselves if they are really good enough to be promoted and not use gender as excuse for own failure.
