Not only did the narrator not smell a massive pile of decomposing bodies until his nose was thrust into them, but also waited politely, abstaining from having his injury treated until the story was over. What a silly story 😄 and not even politically correct, what with the villifying people with deformities😂
@EnCryptedHorrorКүн бұрын
I could pick one more hole in the story: the idea that he would spend a good half hour, while bleeding from his severed fingers, recounting this story to the doctor, instead of just immediately going: "Help! Someone's chopped my fingers off!" 😆 Silly, but fun, I thought, which is why I recorded it in the first place. Doesn't make much sense to accuse it of political incorrectness, since, in 1932, the author, his audience, or his publisher couldn't have predicted what we in 2024 would find objectionable, just as anyone writing today can't predict the same about their future readers... 👀

Hi Jasper - I have listened to other stories of yours which I liked very much :) But, this one - No. I find these kinds of stories very disturbing to my psyche and I wish there had been some sort of warning. I am still anxious because she couldn’t fight back and was helpless. Your characters were written beautifully, though. . . “Psycho” was different as the old woman had died naturally and the shower scene was done in such a way as to be just a scary bit, not real. But this was too real. Could you warn us in future, please. Thanks much :) Have a sunny day ☀️🌷🌱 Now, I have to find a good Wodehouse or a Muppets’ movie :)
@EnCryptedHorror2 күн бұрын
Thanks. I'm not adverse to warnings per se, but other people complain that they contain spoilers. I do label what I do as "horror" which is quite a broad church. What nature of warning would be sufficient, do you think, to warn you what might happen in the story without giving "spoiling" details away? Genuinely interested, as I do sincerely want to help listeners make choices about my content 🙂

I recently watched the 50 short movie of this produced by the BBC as part of their anthology of Supernatural stories. It was the second instalment of “A Ghost Story for Xmas “ and was first aired on Xmas eve 1972. It’s worth a look in my opinion. I think I cast it up from KZbin to the telly from memory. A big thanks to Jasper the friendly ghost story teller who brings a stunning level of quality to his narrations. Simple the best.

@@WilliamTuckwell-r8b Loved that short film with the late great Peter Vaughan. The 70s horror stuff, always with the atonal music and the weird camera angles, really sticks in the mind. I was watching a 1974 BBC version of "The Withered Hand" the other week with my dear 89-year-old mum and it was still so creepy it gave her a nightmare 😄

Yes, they are wonderful and unique films. I’ll have to find “ The Withered Hand” . So great your Mum still got the creeps from watching it. There is so much rich fodder in the way of these largely forgotten stories that are ripe for making into films. It’d be great if more could be put into a “ Cabinet of Curiosities” or “ Black Mirror” type show.
