I was gonna nerd out on y'all and start talking about trigononerdery but here's a solution that doesn't require you to pay for like $800 laser, per rig. (distance from the top of the shank of the bit -> the ground) * sin (30) + offset(11.5" or 292cm) Change 30 to whatever angle you're boring at. Make sure your calculator isn't in radians. Checks payable to your favorite charity for 1/10th Hilti is charging. Also, the flexibility of the stand is what makes Hilti great. You can essentially pick an arbitrary point and be home-free. I guess if you need to anchor in a new bolt on a wall, this system would be alright but then you're struggling between the stand and ensuring your point is on target and I can't remember was there a gas line here, did they even turn off the gas? Go into your Home Depot and go to where they offer round stock. 1) Find the size small enough for your chuck but big enough to fit a Sharpie and buy a foot of that wood stock. 2) Take a 0.5mm pen or mechanical pencil at 0.5mm or thinner [1]. Use that to 3) Use a center-finder on a combi-square, strike a line as perpendicular as you can against the straight edge. Repeat twice more at 120deg and 240 deg[2]. 4) Take to a drill press and find the size closest to the Sharpie's circumference, taking to a depth of 50%, maybe deeper if you used a soft wood. 5) To extend this idea into something more useful, take a strip 2 inch by 1 inch by, I duno how ever far you think you'll need as a radius + 20%. Drill and dowel one end into that piece of Home Depot lumber, and on the other end make a mount for the Sharpie (the sharpie is no longer in the chuck/collet, it's now being used as the scribe for the "compass"). Use the nerd math, scribe and pick your ideal place or use the method mentioned above [1] Construction pencils from lumber yards can be sanded down with 320grit to way better than 0.5mm. Fine furniture makers used to do this all the time, back before the days of the CEOs, big-box stores, etc. You can also look for draughtsman kits of 0.3mm in HB, you know, if your prints really call out for that sort of precision. I think a Sharpie will do you just fine [2] You could technically do this once more, moving to any arbitrary point around the circumference, but having 3 lines co-incident is a good sanity check.

Can anyone understand the risk assessment that has presumably been carried out here? He does not appear to be wearing face protection or respiratory protection for drilling and chiselling. Is he wearing anything to protect his hearing? Yet he wears a hard hat throughout in spite of being indoors and not having anyone obviously working near him. Or is this just a gloves + hat = safety image that is not supposed to reflect real working practice?
