New builder here, what tools SHOULD I use then? I have bought myself a HG Char's Zaku II (Gundam the origin.) And a force impulse gundam (RG) - wont be building it soon likely to buy a kit before hand as RG intimidates me looking at that manual lol.
@ilovetoxicwomenКүн бұрын
Nipper, since that’s the only required tool, but i would also say to get either a hobby knife or glass file to get rid of nub marks.
@SunwardHobbiesToronto14 сағат бұрын
@John-ii6he for gunpla? Technically speaking you only really need one. A side/sprue cutter. That's it. Anything else is truly optional. Now, the one that skirts being optional are sanding materials like sanding paper of various and ascending grits to smooth out surfaces after nipping them from the sprue! No need for glue/cement unless you're dealing with a "handgrenade" of a model kit. Breathe on it and it falls apart. Read/ reviews on the kits you bought to see if cement/glue is necessary

@SunwardHobbiesToronto2 күн бұрын
@Ish134 have fun! And the funny thing about that is master grades are easier to build than real grade despite master grades being bigger. It's because real grades try to cram master grade level details on a smaller model. You end up with an overengineered nightmare of a kit sometimes

Dont get the nipper shown in the video, I had it when I first started and it creates so much stress nub marks. Get a decent single bladed nipper unless you wanna spend 80% of the time sanding
@SunwardHobbiesToronto6 күн бұрын
@yusean7228 heavily disagree. This nipper is the best bang for your buck nipper. Surprisingly sharp for the price. And you sand gundams regardless anyway so your sanding point is moot tbh. No need for ultra expensive godhands (there's a very good godhand nipper for $40 but that's still expensive)
@yusean72286 күн бұрын
@SunwardHobbiesToronto The single bladed nipper I got was a ~11usd (converted from my currency) Stedi ms-110 nipper, as opposed to the entry nipper that cost ~7usd. From my experience, it was a world of difference. While it's true I still have to sand the pieces but it's 1 in every 5 pieces instead of every single one since I can now cut near the nubs without make a big stress mark. But your experience is just as valid I suppose, glad you actually liked those nippers

Hmmm...not sure I agree with avoiding pre-2010 tooling. I think this really depends on experience, the subject, and specific kit. There are some Jo-Han kits from the 1960's, no longer made obviously, that are pretty good. One of the first kits I ever made as a kid -- no paint -- was the Tamiya 25pdr and Quad gun tractor. That was a great kit when released in 1974 (I first built it in 1977 or 1978) as a pre-teen, and is still an excellent kit. If one wants a Brit field gun from North Africa campaign, there are any options, newer or otherwise. Likewise, especially on cars, the kits were never re-released because the car was last popular 25-50 years ago. Other kits, like Revell's '68 and '69 Dodge Charger have issues in certain runs. The bodies can be the same, except the side marker lights changed in those two model years. Some Revell kits have the marker lights molded in making it more difficult to swap bodies. The Revell 69 has a molded in soft top, the 68 a metal hard top. If one wanted to make a 68 soft top, the best option is to start with a 69 body, but choose one without the maker lights molded in. No doubt, the quality of kits improved dramatically in the 1990's and early 2000s, and they are getting better every year. The engineering is better and the detail is improving. Certainly, newbies might be better off, less frustrated, with a newer kit. If the subject is appealing or they are trying to create something specific, I don't think a modeler with a few kits under their belt should be scared of older kits.
@SunwardHobbiesToronto6 күн бұрын
@@TXGRunner oh for sure! However, this is vid is mainly made with beginner perspectives in mind! Most beginners who are told of scalemates would only skim the site, just to see if the kit is a new tooling or a rebox. Asking them to do anything else would be asking too much of them. We, as veterans of the hobby, would have the patience. They definitely wouldnt

I am still struggling with brush painting. I tried thinning down but i never hit the right ratio. On larger scales like 1:35 i get visible brushstrokes with every layer. 1:72 i brush fine because the smaller scale is more forgiving and the smaller surface doesn't allow for much brush strokes. I painted a couple 1:72 out the bottle and they turned out fine but 1:35 is hard to paint imo.
@way2sh0rt07grad8 күн бұрын
Have you tried different brushes? A lot has to do with the material of the bristles. You want a nice soft bristle that the paint doesn't stick to if you want to paint without an airbrush. You may already know this already though.
@somebodyoncetoldme83768 күн бұрын
@ That sounds interesting. In fact i'm using lower quality brushes for 1:35 because i needed bigger brushes for which i only had cheap painting ones at hand. My brushes i used for 1:72 are from a different brand and specifically for model building. Might look into a new set of brushes. Thanks!
@SunwardHobbiesToronto6 күн бұрын
@somebodyoncetoldme8376 yes this does sound like a brush issue! Even if a brush might look visually OK, if it's been used for a long time, it may not be good anymore. Unwanted particles stuck in the bristles or frayed bristles that are constantly breaking off. If it's one of those brushes, I think it's time to let go!
