To cover more ground, and get more samples. The solo player on the fringes also attracts the limited number of patrols, making it easier for the rest of the team to complete objectives

Yep.. my goto crowd control with the bugs is the nade launcher. If I equip the nade launcher practically always, I'll have the most number of kills on a mission and often by a lot. My best was about 600 kills on a mission. It will take out patrols easy and will stop a bug breach pretty easily. Sure you rip through ammo pretty quickly but that is often not much of a problem. I'll equip the autocannon sentry for the heavies and I'm pretty good with that loadout. I don't know why more people don't use it.

So, 1, what is the point of using the ballistic shield against bugs, and 2, what is the point of using it all without the Defender (sub-machine gun). You're limited to just a pistol otherwise and it will just sit on your back the whole time.
