Wondering if you have plans for a Freighter Canoe ???

Im going to use 6 ounce cloth on a small rowboat I built using Glen-L plans. Does it matter which side of the cloth should be up … shiny side or the duller Side?

My good friend, Yeung Chan, a world class furniture maker, recently finished a boat from a 1911 design. It can be used for rowing or sailing. I would love to build a canoe, but my shop space is too small for building one. Keep the great videos coming!

Maybe I am not understanding something, or missed it but why the staples? Won’t that make removing it from the forms a pain?

You don't keep things symmetrical by using a level. You keep things symmetrical by measuring from the center line to the strip. Stop misleading people you are causing damage

Stapling strips is 1950s technology. I do not care that the people that staple cannot see the holes. That doesn't bother me. You know what bothers me people are going to have one attempt to build a boat. You shouldn't even have a method to fill gaps. That should not even exist.

What a mess. Just a complete mess. Joke of craftsmanship

If you use a level you wont have a symetric build. The whiskey strip will be off six or more inches in length left versus right side. It will look stupid.

the glue keeps the strips apart. Unless it is all squeezed out you're never going to be tight. So if you had four ml glue per strip and you squeeze out 3 ml. It's obvious that you added three times as much glue as needed. If you see any squeeze out at all you're using too much glue.

Interior and exterior stems are hold over technology from the canvas canoe days. Many builders find them a waste of time. They don't look out of place. They are just no longer needed.

Do not put water on your wood. Don't put water on your wood to raise the grain. Definitely do not put water between grits of sandpaper. Boats were being built long before water proof glue had ever been invented not one drop of water ever touch the wood.

I'm curious as to how balanced this would be, given that the blade surfaces are convex, so that the blade is actually quite a big mass of wood. I made mine concave, with a subtle central rib, using a round-bladed wooden block plane. The paddle then balances just above the blade, and flexes exquisitely without loss of power. Not appropriate for a whitewater paddle, but gorgeous for lake travel. The use of varnish is also controversial. I'm in the camp that says it remains forever tacky and therefore causes blisters. I use Danish Oil and refresh it every year using a ScotchBrite.

The curls of wood on the floor do not represent material that your sander did not remove. The only thing you're accomplishing is thinning the strips. You're putting new planes that replaced the plains of the strip. If those tools work you would never sand the boat would you?
@robertbolding4182
@robertbolding4182 Жыл бұрын
It's called a plane because it places a plane on the wood and a plane is not faring wood bus trips already have a plane and you're trying to get a rid of that plane. Only way you can do that is with a fairing board that is firstly held at the curvature of a boat then pushed in the direction of the strips.

Getting wax contamination on wood that's going to be further epoxied is dangerous and should be avoided at all cost. The best way to remove such contamination is by sanding.

This level of craftsmanship always fascinated me, and makes me wonder how our ancestors did this (as I'm Danish ancestry, but Aussie). Using natural materials and hand tools. Natural technological progression. But I've always thought we should never lose our basic skills using nothing but natural materials and hand tools.

Hi Nick. Im teaching a Strip Canoe Build here in Detroit at a Maker's Space. Ive been a Shipwright for Ten Years. Cant wait to show you our innovations. Laying the strips so they are "Faire" is crucial to the aesthetics. Cheers, for producing enough content so everyone can build and paddle their own Canoe!

Yeah I have a finger joining bit for this but my plan was to glue the planks together before ripping the strips the saving myself the pleasure of gluing strips together.
