For me the star of this song is Jimmy Bain. When he plays that diminished note in the second half of the main riff, it adds this nasty minor edge to it that brings the song up another level beyond your standard "heavy metal". Well done Jimmy, and RIP.

A FUCKIN' MASTERPIECE OF GOOD MUSIC!
@shangclockmania6168Ай бұрын
The final part of the song is chord progression at its finest. First of all, we've got that voice from another dimension. Then we get various interpretations of the chorus, lyrically, as well as being adapted to the chords played. Masterpiece. The only "modern" metal vocalists I could see on par would be 1997-2015 Russel Allen, 1985-2008 Jeff Scott Soto, 2007-2020 Jorn Lande and 1998-2012 Johnny Gioeli.

I think it's about Christ, "You can see his stripes but you know he's clean". "Holy diver" is the analogy he "dived" into hell. It makes more sense, once you will recall that "horn" sign was meaning "apage satanas", as his grandma was religious catholic from Sycily. Nonetheless, it's really good song.

Like so many other songs that Dio sang, this is a smorgasbord of excellently performed techniques. Sometimes I forget the music and the words, just concentrating on his vocal performance. One thing that really stands out, is his use of distortion. I haven't heard any singer that turns vocal distortion on and off with such ease as Dio. It's like his voice is a mixing desk, where he's in total, relaxed control.
