There's always a focus on Women but Men are actually twice as likely to be diagnosed with Autism.
@michele65503 жыл бұрын
That's the point. It used to be males were more than 20 times as likely to be diagnosed. It's not that there's more men/boys on the spectrum, it's that girls and women weren't being diagnosed or often misdiagnosed. It's public awareness of Autistic women that has closed the diagnosis gap.
@A95-x2j3 жыл бұрын
@@michele6550 And where is the evidence, Michele? Men weren't "20x more likely" to be diagnosed. I'll ask for a source on that one. en were diagnosed more because Men generally suffer with Autism more and if you knew anything about Autism diagnoses, then you'd know it's hard to actually accurately diagnose it. This is just another "Women are oppressed victims" BS.

Autism isn't just a male condition. Females are on the autism spectrum too. Females can mask autism better than males. That's why females are misdiagnosed more often than males.
@A95-x2j3 жыл бұрын
Autism mainly effects Men, but all you see on the TV is "Women and Autism" - despite there being significantly more coverage on mental health for Women, along with numerous financial charities that specifically cater to Women's health but there are non for Men-only. By all means, we should not ignore Women with autism, despite the fact the media ignores Male domestic abuse victims because Women are the primary victims. Females don't nessecarily mask better than Males by gender as a default. It's primarily in the difference of acceptable behaviour between Men and Women. Additionally, an Autistic diagnoses has become such a grey area because an Autism diagnosis can apply to a wide number of people in society since the definition of Autism has become so loosely defined.
@athens314152 жыл бұрын
@@A95-x2j Actually, it was because the definition of autism was so rigidly defined that only the most severe cases were acknowledged and diagnosed. Meanwhile, millions of other autistics were needlessly suffering. It's not a "loosening" of the condition -- it's evaluating the condition in it's entirety, as it should be.

Lovely talk. My grandson is on the spectrum so we're slowly learning what he can and can't deal with. He doesn't like changes without pre warning we've discovered . He's only three and is still working on speech development, he had lots of melt downs before he could talk because he was so frustrated that he couldn't make his needs and wants known. He's now speaking 3 and 4 word sentences bot having problems still with hard consonants but lots of kids his age do. I've worked with autistic spectrum disorder children since 1974 and I've learned a lot over the years but learn new things all the time.keep up the good work, you'll help some other children by giving the information you've learned to others who are struggling to help their child. Because I'm her mother my daughter wouldn't listen to what I had to share with her so I encouraged her to seek out professionals which she did, thank heavens. Since I looked after him every day I recognized it early on and started working with him on some things but because I'd never developed a care plan for language development , just followed recommendations I didn't want to steer him in the wrong way so encouraged his parents to get that assessed and it's worked well. The thing that helped a lot for him was to begin attending a daycare program so he could see other children's behavior and speech, he's smart as a whip and it took no time at all for him to begin to talk and learn play skills. Thanks for sharing the video Sarah.

Hi Sarah, thank you so much for sharing this, i found your presentation very interesting. My 9 year old son has autism and we are currently going through many of the issues you described, especially at school. If it is possible for you to show them i would be very interested in seeing the key ring things you spoke about. It sounds like you and your mum are a great team in overcoming many of the issues you face. I'm a cross stitcher too and I have enjoyed following your flosstube videos. All the best Sally

Lovely speech ! You've done so well, it was great to hear that you've made it through the hard times and have found the things that make you happy and feel safe about. Your Mum is just the right one to be there with you all the way through the long process of getting a diagnosis and supporting your choices. My little grandson who is 3 and I look after 5 days a week, is going through the diagnostic process now. His grandfather, an uncle and a cousin are also on the spectrum and are doing well. Grandad and uncle were never diagnosed but found technical things easy for them so did find work and raised families. There are so many things in place here in Nova Scotia, Canada for children in the spectrum but there is a long waiting list to be included . I have actually worked with children in the spectrum since 1974 so I do what I can to help him in his development. He was very frustrated and often had meltdowns because he couldn't talk but in the last little while he started daycare two days a week and now he is talking so much more and making his needs and wants known so he's better able to cope. Your family must be so proud of you for working so hard to find your happiness and I congratulate you! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🙋🏼🇨🇦

I'm so glad people are finally becoming more aware of autism in girls and women and getting them the support they need. It hurts to go through life being teased and not meeting societies expectations and not knowing why , how to feel better about oneself. My grand daughter I am pretty sure has Tourette's syndrome and though it it well recognized in boys girls are not easily diagnosed and so end up with terrible self esteem and there is a high suicide rate among them. My son was diagnosed at around age 10 and had a struggle but even his sister won't admit her daughter is suffering, breaks my heart for her. She is a brilliant , beautiful little girl and it's so unfair for her to not be understood because of some mistaken sense of pride or just not wanting to admit anything is wrong. I could just shake them. It's going to get worse in the next few years as puberty comes along. Thanks for sharing this Sarah. Hugs
