@kevintieu51984 ай бұрын
I think Messier has one of the top 3 hockey careers of all time. He has been the winningest player since he came into the league, had a lot of individual success, and is considered a legend in the game. Only a handful of players are in the best career conversation, and that includes Mess, Gretz, Lemieux, Sid, Howe, and Orr.

@@oilers999 If I played with Gretzky, Kurri, Anderson, Fuhr, Leetch, Larmer, Lowe and Richter I would have won 6 cups, too. Messier didn't win cups all by himself. Irrelevant argument. If Messier was that great -- all by himself -- then explain the lack of success in Vancouver with a larger paycheck? There were ever only three playhers I've ever seen who could win championships practically all by themselves in the 50 years I've been watching (and playing) hockey: Their names were Gretzky, Lemieux and Howe. Everyone else is just a pale shadow. On pure ability, Neely was way ahead of Messier.

Someone want to talk about why Gretzky is still considered the GOAT of the NHL? He may have more points, but Messier, besides being second (now third) place, was a better all-round player. And if Mess was a superior leader, what other claim to the GOAT throne does Gretzky have? Furthermore, when you discuss other sports, likening Gretzky to Jordan is not appropriate. With his intensity and superior all-round play, he probably ought to be likened to Messier.

I really wish Wayne Gretzky had stayed in Edmonton for an extra year. Then, we would’ve acquired Gretzky directly from Edmonton in 1989 and he would’ve been the one captaining us in 1994 to the promised land, while we would still have Messier and head coach Mike Keenan. Also, that means that John Vanbiesbrouck would’ve been starting in net for that Rangers Stanley Cup winning roster.
@broadstreet214 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't have worked out that way. Had Gretzky stayed in Edmonton one more season, he would have left in free agency for Los Angeles. Unless New York outbids them.
@jasonarokiaraj98174 жыл бұрын
broadstreet21 sure it would’ve. If we had benched Glen Hanlon for John Vanbiesbrouck in game 2 of the 1984 playoffs against the Islanders, we would’ve won that series and gone to game 7 of the Final against Edmonton. Then, Gretzky would’ve stayed in Edmonton for an extra year and we would’ve gotten him in the 89 offseason, instead of Los Angeles. Then, Beezer stays with us in the 93 offseason and up until retirement in the 2003 offseason.
@broadstreet214 жыл бұрын
@@jasonarokiaraj9817 So, are you suggesting that had the Rangers beat the Islanders in 1984, they would have beaten Edmonton in the Finals? Even if they COULD have beaten Edmonton, which would have been like the NHL's Miracle on Ice (I'm exaggerating a bit, but you get my point), would Gretzky have stayed until 89 just to win a fourth Cup?
@jasonarokiaraj98174 жыл бұрын
broadstreet21 no, I never said that we would’ve beaten Edmonton. In fact, I think we would’ve lost to them. However, what I do believe is that with Beezer in net, we would’ve taken that series to a game 7 and we would’ve lost that game 7 by a score of 2-1 and Gretzky would’ve won the Conn Smythe.
@broadstreet214 жыл бұрын
@@jasonarokiaraj9817 So, if Gretzky won the Conn Smythe in 1984, how would that lead to his staying in Edmonton until 1989, for New York to get him?
