Hello, what's a fair price range for testing ?
@TrinityMartialArtsNY2 ай бұрын
It's hard because it depends on where you're located and what's involved in your test. I will say, for color belts at my school, we do not charge any belt testing fees because the belts cost a total of $3 and our belt testings are held one night a month, on a night we would normally have classes. It's no more time spent for me....so why are other schools charging $50 for a color belt test?

The jumping punch is actually correct here. So many others get it wrong. Cobra form though...lighter on the feet.

i also work as a martial arts teacher and the kids i supervise usually also have a really hard time differentiating between "listening" and "understanding". Its like theyre a recorder that captures everything you say word for word without contemplating what youre saying. the mind of a child is quite amazing tbh

Your legs are your best friends in a fight. If you can, RUN.

I dont disagree with the palm strike thing for the reasons you stated, and knees and elbows all day for the same reasons you stated. Before even addressing fighting off an attacker I recommend EVERYONE get to a point in their cardio where they can sustain a brisk job for a mile. Every self defense instructor will tell you to create distance once you break free but it serves you nothing if you can't get far enough away to save yourself before gassing out

I’m a big fan of “pressure testing” students. I don’t want anyone to get hurt, but if there’s no threat of contact then are you really being pushed? That's why sparring is important.

Do people get the midnight blue belts embroidered with the holders' names like they do for black belts?

Yes. My original belt was midnight blue and had my name in Korean on one side and the federation's name in Korean on the other.

What's your interpretation of the moves at 1:10 and 1:19? Have seen a number of variations of this form, and this move seems to be the thing that changes the most.
@TrinityMartialArtsNY Жыл бұрын
It's a great question. The first thing I would point out is that I don't think that sequence (or any sequence in any form/hyung/kata) necessarily has to be one long combination. Sometimes the moves are independent of each other or can even be in response to one another. And I would never claim my interpretation is the only right one. I teach the X-press as grabbing and pulling in. This could be seen as preparation for the strike with the uppercut, and even the high block can be a strike to the jaw. The retreat on one foot I often hear as step back away from a kick, but I focus more on the hands, where the circling motion can be used for a take down. Lastly, if you interpret the retreat as a jump away from a kick, the following move can be seen as capturing the kick and then lifting to throw/off balance the opponent. Would love to hear other thoughts/interpretations

Tang Soo Do=Karate Do,Shotokan Ryu
@TrinityMartialArtsNY Жыл бұрын
True. In this video we discuss specifically the traditions of the Hwang Kee's Moo Duk Kwan
@barrettokarate Жыл бұрын
These forms were not created by Hwang Kee. People need to stop with these falsehoods. These forms were created by "Gigo" Funakoshi (son of Gichin Funakoshi) where they were called Taikyoku. Tang Soo Do just like the majority of their other forms got them from Shotokan, through Won Kuk Lee, Gichin Funakoshi's books or other kwans. The only forms that Hwang created were the Chil Sung and Yuk Ro. Everything else was modified by either Lee, Hwang or members of the Ji Do Kwan who merged with the Moo Duk Kwan from Shotokan, Shudokan and Shito-ryu forms and Hwang's Chinese style background. People need to stop taking the Moo Duk Kwan's claims as doctrine and look at outside sources. It's just like the Gracies. In the beginning we all believed their claims until we had access to third party sources and saw that they weren't being completely truthful.
@TrinityMartialArtsNY Жыл бұрын
Hello Sir/Ma’am. You’re right about a lot of that. Hwang Kee was definitely influenced and perhaps, to some level, plagiarized the forms. However there are some differences between the entire series across different arts. So when I use the term “created” I simply mean created them in the was TSD people practice them today and brought into the Moo Duk Kwan organization. I completely agree there has been a lot of misconceptions about the history of the art.
