Great video first off! I have one question I’m starting to learn how to tattoo on fake skin and a few friends to practice. But I can’t really get a tattoo for myself cus I have a religious belief with god and Jesus Christ. My question is can I still be a tattoo artist with having no tattoos myself?? I would really appreciate anyone to let me know if that’s okay

I apprenticed, but I feel self taught. My first mentor was and is absolute trash. No joke. I was just desperate to get in the door. My second mentor just wasn’t good at TEACHING. Best boss I’ve ever had tho.

I’ve heard this so often and it’s so unfortunate!!! Definitely not saying that all apprenticeships are awful but it’s so disheartening how often I hear such similar stories!

Hi Hailey, big fan of your videos. Im covered in ink and draw as a hobby, seriously considering taking the jump. I'd be curious to see how you design your flash, and the process behind that. Might make for an interesting video idea!

Hi Hailey, just saying thanks for sharing your thoughts on being a self taught artist. Your videos are great, you’re also really cute in a good way. I’ve been studying for the last 3 years and am just now laying down some ink. Thank God for procreate and stencils!

I wish I knew you in real life I have more questions- I feel like I CANT be a tattoo artist because my LINES aren’t perfect. I can’t draw a perfect straight line, I can’t draw a perfect circle, my art has always been what I call “perfectly imperfect art” “trashy art” I paint and I draw but there are flaws. With tattoos I see them so CLEAN and perfect. I don’t think my art style fits. My friends and family always told me to tattoo.

Hi Amber !!! It sounds like you’re a great artist and have the potential to be a great tattoo artist! There are a few options. There are tattoo artists who tattoo “careless style” tattoos (more illustrative, doodle designs). This could also be a situation that would be worth seeking an apprenticeship as they would have you doing certain drawing exercises to tighten up those lines !!!! So many factors to consider but I hope that this response is even mildly helpful!!!

Do you just have to have a business license to start buying from licensed tattoo suppliers? And where do you buy those things. I live in Arizona so it would be different but is there an online supplier that is professional and reliable?

Thank you so much! This has been exactly what I’ve been looking for. There’s a lot of courses that I see online and in person for the tiny tat and fine line tattooing that give you a certification. I’m assuming that certification is not something that’s required in Utah?
@VanMalin
@VanMalin 9 ай бұрын
Hi !!! No absolutely not it’s purely a piece of paper that says certificate but means absolutely nothing to Utah’s health and safety guidelines for tattooing. Not to say that you can’t gain some valuable information from those “courses” but it is just a made up certificate. So glad I could help ! =)

I’ve been tattooing for 17 years and this is proof of what I’ve be en talking about a lot about lately. Apprenticeship is becoming long lost tradition. In all honesty even those of us that had an apprenticeship ultimately taught ourselves. It does make me sad though that the history is lacking in being self taught. One thing I did gain from my apprenticeship is learning who is who and what each person gave to our history. I’m currently working on building a remote apprenticeship program that would include this and could be used as a guide tool to help artists seeking the self taught route. I do hope to work with different states to meet the standards they have for licensing. The industry is changing and a lot of the old guys are freaking out instead of learning how to guide it in the right direction.

I also wanna add, in all honesty, apprenticeships are for the privileged period. I don't personally live in North America, but from what I am hearing, you're paying a good amount of $$$ to get one, and doing free labour for intense hours and days a week leaving you without too many options for a side income. In Europe, you don't mostly pay for apprenticeships, but indeed are required the spend the time and hours (unpaid ofc) , which is very fair but then you are also responsible for admin stuff, orders, inventory, guest artists, instagram page etc ( manager related tasks) . To be an apprentice you either have to live under a roof without paying rent i.e. with your parents, have a partner who earns for the both parties, or get a good loan/ have parents give monthly money. Clearly I am a self taught artist. Not saying this life is the best either. You grow slower at times, learn slower, you're not always surrounded by artists, but at least you take things at your own pace and can still afford a side job. I don't regret doing what I am doing. There is so much access to information, online licenses on health, safety and sanitation, so much access to learning how to tattoo, and just as Hailey said : A lot of tattooers are actually more than fine to answer questions etc. Take your own path and keep the safety of others and urself in mind <3!
