How difficult is it to find parts for a WD-40? I know that the engine is the same as the TD-40 crawler tractor engine and the PD-40 power unit. The engine also has a reasonable amount of commonality with the early TD-14 crawler tractor engine and the early UD-14 power unit. Regards from Australia.

Saw on your AC conversion thread that you guys bought a GM motor home. Be sure to Google "Cinnabar Engineering" in Sandusky, MI They specialize in those units. You may have already heard of them.

Did you restore this set up yourself or did you buy it outright? Can I ask how much should I pay for an engine like that?

Your car looks and runs great! We have at the same system on our 71 Super but it had been removed before we bought it. I have all the parts except the compressor bracket and that has been impossible to find. Could you send me a few pictures of the mount so we can fabricate one? Thanks, Rick

Would be glad to, however you cannot see much with the engine installed in the car. These mounts show up on "TheSamba" classified fairly often, just keep looking.

Looks like I may have found what I need at a salvage yard on the samba. Can you take a look at the picture that shows a few types of AC mounts and point me in the right direction? If so I need an email or help me figure a way to send the pic. Thanks, Rick

TheNarrowgauger I used to play on this engine and tender as a small child. It had been taken out of service in favor of a new streamlined gas power locomotive and cars. It was on display for kids to play on. The local Optimist club decided to have it restored to operation in the early 1990's. I good friend of mine undertook the project. He was a machinist and railroad enthusiast and grew up around steam threshing engines. After being beautifully restored, the Optimist club parked it once they realized it took work to fire a steam engine. In about 2000 I was contacted to see if I could help them get it going again. I spent a couple of days (I grew up around steam engines helping my Uncle fire is Case scale threshing engine, of which I am now the proud owner). After a couple of days of work I had it up and running, taught one gentleman how to operate it. He died and it was parked again. Last year I was visiting the park and walked over to the roundhouse to see the status of the engine. A young man politely asked me to leave as the public was not allowed in that area. I told him if he ever wanted help with the engine just give me a call. I left him my cellphone number and never expected to hear from him again. About two weeks later he called and I agreed to come up and help him get it operational. It is a joy to fire, wish it was back on coal, however the propane is really better for the park environment given it eliminates the cinders.

David Jones Sounds like quite the undertaking to bring it back to life, but I'm very glad you were able to. Firing up one of these (now 111 year old) locomotives is something else, and it's amazing that they still fire up so easily to this day. For the sake of being in a public park, I can see why propane would be effective, yet I imagine it'd be very expensive. Over here at Eden Springs, we still run coal in our engines. When I started working on #7, none of the plumbing parts were on it, and to make matters worse, they were all spread throughout our engine house. Thankfully I knew just enough about these old engines to put everything back in place. We did a hydro on it, fired it up on wood, and enjoyed running it for the first time in over 30 years. It's a really big testament to the abilities of the House of David builders to have made 8 of these little engines so perfectly, and for two of them to still be running today. If somehow we could get the two of them together for a reunion of sorts, that would be amazing, but will all the planning that would be involved, it likely wouldn't happen. Still, I could suggest the idea to our owner over here, and see what he thinks.
