If you're gluing the carpet together, why do you need to seal the carpet first? Is it defective?

You brake the backing when you cut it

On woven carpets there is no backing holding the fabric (the loops or cut pile) together. You seal the edges of the carpet to prevent the yarns from falling out. The seam tape alone will not do that. Seam sealing is supposed to be done on all types of carpeting not just woven's. Very few installers bother to do it. On woven's it's absolutely mandatory. Why skip sealing to save a few minutes on a product that may cost $100 per square yard. Not many installers can afford to replace a job that they screwed up.

@@stevenwolfe2803 then why does the carpet industry insist that you also apply a sealer on first? Sounds a little exsessive to me.

@@randywl8925 I understand that but what about regular broadloom? There never was a need for it before why now? Seems to me carpet manufacturers are making carpets worse and worse and making the installer responsible for it. Is it any wonder people are pulling out their carpets?

Wow! With all those special tools and skills, they must pay you well to do the seams. It would be worthwhile I would think given how much work is involved.
