Hofmann was attracted to grid system but encouraged playing with grids and break them a little to find artistic freedom and harmony. Hofmann liked using photography and high contrast. Grids are a foundation for freedom, guides not limitations. Collegue of Muller thought that even the geometric shadows were too subjective And that muller should make typography into an image. How many fields I need to communicate what I want? What needs to be the biggest? How can I break the rule of grids in this design? Breaking the grids by designers who grew tired . Thank you so much to Greg, for sharing infos and, above all, his passion for the history of graphic design, which I had the opportunity to discover from a 2016 lecture held by him in NY, available on Vimeo. His effort to speak clearly and slowly pays well, mostly for those who are not strictly American-speaking. I think there are still so many aspects to be rediscovered: in my personal experience of research on Franco Grignani, every detail I found opened new unexpected frontiers... The big aim for all of us passes through the sharing of our findings via the open digitization of historical resources. We really need more initiatives like this one.
