I remember loving this song from way long time back to when it was released, and then I just heard it yesterday for the first time in many decades. I wonder what happened to this album and why it is unavailable, and never played or used in media or on radio? It is truly a brilliant tune, well put together, well written, upbeat, but for a Christian message - not preachy or heavy handed. Love it.

My favorite album from that year. Produced by none other than George (The Beatles) Martin.

The brilliant organ solo on this track was played by Henry Babraj, unfortunately he rarely gets credit for his fine work. Henry and I had played together in Roy Kenner and the Associates until we broke up around the same time as the Mandala and Roy and Henry were asked to join.

Thank you for this. This was a killer group whose players went on to more high-profile bands. But first, the Dom/Don matter raised by HenrykJerome - Dom was also know as Don and Donnie by those closer to him. A friend of mine who played in his band always referred to him as Donnie. Madala did a few singles, most notably 'Opportunity' and 'Love-itis' (also covered by the J. Geils band). 'Opportunity' featured singer George Olliver, who at the front of the lads in the inset shot above). 'Love-itis' had Roy Kenner singing. He is also on the album. When Mandala ran out of steam they changed their name to Bush (circa 1970), moved from Toronto to Los Angeles, recorded a self-titled album, gained a great reputation on the local scene...then fizzled out. The band appeared on Troiano's self-title debut album before drummer Whitey Glann and bassist Prakash John went on to play with Lou Reed ('Rock 'n' Roll Animal' era) and also Alice Cooper. Whitey is the drummer with the upturned bass drums in Bette Midler's movie, 'The Rose'. Troiano and Kenner took over the spot vacated by Joe Walsh when he left the James Gang to go solo, recording the albums 'Straight Shooter' and 'Passing Through' before Troiano was asked to leave because his material and playing (coupled with Kenner's singing) made the band sound like Bush, not the James Gang. Tommy Bolin took his spot before later moving on to Deep Purple after recording - a creating a sensation on - Billy Cobham's 'Spectrum' album. Troiano went to the Guess Who for their final couple albums in the mid-70s, scoring a hit with Roseanne before singer/pianist Burton Cummings pulled the plug, citing the complexity of Troiano's musical ambitions as an issue (Cummings was into music of the 50s, Troiano into fusion of the mid 70s). So Troiano once again went solo, with a fine album, 'Burning at the Stake, featuring top session players including drummer Steve Ferrone (Average White Band, Chaka Khan, Eric Clapton, and for many years up until his death, Tom Petty). Two albums later he had Kenner back onboard and from the album 'Fret Fever' had a hit in Canada with 'We All Need Love' (my fave track is 'South American Run'). Troiano also got into TV soundtracking for some big Canadian series. Sadly he died some years back due to prostate cancer. Drummer Whitey Glann is also gone. If you are familiar with British band Bush, well, their records in Canada were released as Bush X due to Troiano owning the name for that territory. Eventually he sold the name to them, with the amount apparently going to a cancer charity. BTW, Troiano, though already well-known in the mid 60s Toronto scene, got his big break after taking over the spot Robbie Robertson left when he quit Ronnie Hawkins & the Hawks to for The Band. Though largely unknown to the general music audience, Mandala/Bush were highly influential with many Canadian players.

Thanks for the history! The Mandala, for me, expressed a level of musicianship rare for most bands in 1968. I wasn't there then, but I've been told they got no US airtime, even on FM. I also heard they blew 'Herman's Hermits' off the stage in Canada.
@MrCherryJuice
@MrCherryJuice Жыл бұрын
@@lilysandoz True, they were great players. As for Herman's Hermits, with due respect, they were a British pop band, not a player's band like Mandala were. Here is their first hit, 'Opportunity', with George Olliver on the mic. He was very influenced by James Brown as were the rest of the band. Yet they had their own sound. Listening to this reminds me that even by 1967 standards the band's sound was somewhat dated, as Cream, Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane and the new bands rising up from 1967's 'Summer of Love' and the psych era triggered by the Jeff Beck-era Yardbirds starting back in late '65 and made more pronounced by some tracks on the Beatles' 'Revolver', were more the direction music was headed. Still, there is no denying the great performances by all the band members here. To this day, this tune remains an anthem to many Canadian players, particularly from Toronto, who savoured life during those times. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bXrEg5uMn890Z5I&start_radio=1

I have two CDs (homemade ones) from the Troubadour May 28th 1971, if you are interested. I was at the club that night watching the band and the reel to reel tape recorder as the reels were spinning. My Mom hired an Engineer she knew named Cecil Spiller. Interesting guy in that he had his own record making equipment in his garage on Chelsea Street in Santa Monica. Many thanks for your channel and posts!

I heard Mandala on Rochester radio station WBBF, which also had the echo. WBBF played like: Mandala, Vanilla Fudge, the Rascals, the Who- I liked to call them the Hoes, Cream, Led Zeppelin, Paul Revere and the Raiders, the Rugbys, the Rustix, the Rolling Stones, who's song, Jumping Jack Flash, reminded me of Star Market's storerooms, Mason Williams, who's guitar sounds like Andres Segovia's, Jose Feliciano, who's guitar sounds like Charlie Byrd's, the Turtles, the Grassroots, who's song, Get It Together, always frightened me because of the lead guitar solo in it which also contained some squeaks in it, etc, etc, etc. -Mark Weintraub.

I had the joy of seeing this amazing band live when I was a teenanger living in Montreal. If you think this music sounds great on the record, live was another experience. The energy this band exuded onstage was something that still brings back vivid memories to this very day. Of course the highlight for me was incomparable Domenic Troiano what a guitarist and showman. He for me was one of the greatest contemporary electric guitar players I have ever heard live period.

I learned about Seatrain in 1981or sometime around then, when I was in highschool. Bluegrass has some core fans but information was (still is) very hard to come by in Japan back then and I read about the album on this thin monthly magazine that was available only in esoteric record shops and guitar shops, found the album in a second hand record shop, and have been hooked on their stuff ever since.

I'm fairly certain they had another version of this song, because I also remember the line about the DJ, and a different intro. "Little girl" seems to fit better in light of what comes after. I love this song. I saw Seatrain perform in Central Park in 1971, which really dates me. Do you see who the producer of the album was? George Martin. Beatles. Yeah yeah yeah.
