We the living entities are eternal souls, we are covered by gross and subtle bodies. The gross body is what we can see - our senses - our hands legs,the different organs ec , and the subtle body which is made of mind, intelligence and false ego. At death, we change the gross body, and take another body , but the subtle body accompanies the soul into another gross body. So the mind stays with us till we remain in this material world in different bodies in different lifetimes. All the impressions are stored in the mind. A small baby cannot eat , or talk or walk, but in due course of time it will because the ability is already there, when the body develops all will be manifest, similarly , the functioning of the mind will also be manifest in due course of time.
