It's always amazing and heartwarming to see people keeping up traditional lion dance. Though modern lion dance appears to be the most predominant form around, it just can't beat some good ol' traditional lion dance.

🧧The Legend Of The Lion Dance🦁 👹 #NiánShòu 👹 🦁According to legend, on the eve of every CNY, an unknown animal would destroy the fields, crops and animals belonging to the farmers of a village in China. The villagers could not identify the beast and named it 👹 #Nian 👹, which came to mean “year” in Chinese. To put a stop to the ravaging, the villagers made a model of the animal out of bamboo and paper, which was manipulated by two men, accompanied by the loud beating of instruments. According to another version of this legend, the villagers made a model of a #lion out of bamboo and cloth after discovering that Nian was afraid of #lions, and accompanied it with the loud beating of pots and pans. They waited for Nian on the eve of CNY, and succeeded in driving it away. Henceforth, the #liondance was performed annually on CNY with drums, cymbals and gongs. Nowadays, the #lion_dance is performed not only during CNY, but also for opening ceremonies, welcoming of important persons and other auspicious occasions.🦁

A very impressive celebration for the Chinese New Year in London’s Chinatown. Fortuitous clear weather for the outdoor celebration. Visiting every business for good fortune was a gracious, respectful and thoughtful gesture for the lion dance troupe. I hope they were thanked with many red envelopes from the proprietors. NYC’s main lion dance and CNY parade in the Manhattan Chinatown will be on February 25th. We are hoping for clear weather also for this celebration that dates back for a couple of centuries in NYC. Happy, Healthy & Prosperous Year Of The Dragon 🐉🧧🐲!

不知道会不会有人骂。我还是想评论下希望以后会进步，才能更好继续延续传统在其他国度。后面那个人不能一直站太远，会让中间很瘦而布条下垂，那狮子就看起来背部有问题。 坐下来吃青不能前脚跪着，四脚动物坐下来吃东西是前脚往前直放的（所以你就要前面的人屁股坐下来）。裤子也没配好色。整体感觉就没那么漂亮的醒狮。

with the long body you are supposed to stay as far back as you can, and it may seem like you have a very different style of lion dance compared to the one in the video as it seems as you don’t understand that there are various types of lion dance that can vary, however coming from someone who has experience in lion dance for years i can say the UK scene is very good, and i would like to see you try and perform lion dance better than this

@@jeffhunter1686 u don need to be part of it and experient it to know its beauty or not. u only need ever sees lion dance then u can comment its beauty or not, im not talking something very technical, just beauty itself, the back, the leg posing, the pants color not matching. all very simple thing, even 7 yrs old kid can tell its certainly ugly than most lion dance worldwide. goodluck with ur taste if u think its no problem. happy cny

This is unique. There is no pre CNY Lion Dance in NYC. The NYC Lion Dance troupe will practice, sometimes in public, but there is never a dance in public. In NYC, there are 3 Chinatowns: Manhattan (The oldest Chinatown since the 1800s), Queensborough and Brooklyn. Each Chinatown has its own CNY parade, celebration and smaller festivities. This celebration in London is insightful and fun. It appears the climate is warmer as well. CNY celebration in NYC is often called Lunar New Year celebration since there are many other cultures from Asian, such as Koreans, Cambodians, Vietnamese, Filipinos, Malaysians, Singaporeans, Mongolians, Burmese, Thai, etc. The Lunar New Year celebrations begin on February 9, 2024. Happy, Healthy and Prosperous Year of the Dragon!

The Chinese don't follow the lunar calendar(阴历) , but Chinese calendar（农历），therefore it is Happy Chinese New Year, not lunar new year. check Wikipedia about lunar calendar and you will know more

Very nice, synchronized dance moves. The lifts are done smoothly by a strong lion dancer. The timing is precise to the drummer’s beats. It’s a nice insight to the demanding training involved in an ancient, beautiful Chinese tradition. Thank you for the inside view of hard work and discipline involved!

There is no such thing as a Rainbow colored lion. Maybe that is what you have preferred to name it but, it is the lion-head of the great 3 Kingdom story about the 4 generals who swore brotherhood to each other as they fought a common opponent. This lion head is named after the senior general, Liu Bei. The extremely red one is named after General Kwan Kung, the black one is named after the impulsive and quick to fight General Cheung Fei. Sorry to interrupt your conversation, Just sharing.

Very nice and unique colors on the single lion. The style is different from the lion dances in NYC’s 3 Chinatowns: usually 2 or 4 lions, each lion is in a single color. Red envelopes are fed to the Lion during the dance by all viewers who desire luck and prosperity for the new year. Finally, as many as 4 dancers stand on each other’s shoulders to have the Lion eat a head of lettuce that’s raised high on a pole via a string attached to the lettuce, symbolizing money, wealth and fortune. Very entertaining!

Interesting! In NYC, the CNY Lion Dance is performed in all local businesses, mainly in restaurants. Business owners and clients then gift the Lion with many red envelopes (filled with cash) as it dances in the aisles of each business. This will ensure good fortune and a prosperous new year for each red envelope gifted. Fun perspective inside a mall in Europe. Thank you!

Insightful and lovely to watch the camaraderie in another country. Watching the king’s coronation on TV, one never sees the tributes to the new king from other cultures in the U.K. NYC audiences only saw the traditional British festivities, never showing the Chinese British fun. Thank you from NYC!

Having seen Chinese New Year Lion Dances in NYC my entire life, it is very nice to see CNY celebrated in major cities outside the Big Apple. The CNY lion dance in London is a bit different, but still very entertaining. Kudos!
