This is so interesting! I wonder why the words pronunciation changed over time

Every language changes over time. If a language isn’t changing, it is a dead language. So, the answer to your question is multi-faceted and endless.

Where the place? Upon the heath. There to meet with good ol' Keith. Works perfectly,.... no need to use some archaic pronunciation.

There is no "gag" in As You Like It with respects to the fool musing about ripening and rotting, other than the meaning which is plainly there: time both ripens and rots. That's it, and it plays on the contemporary adage, "soon ripe, soon rotten". While a case might conceivably be made for hour=whore, and tale=tail, "ripe" would not have sounded muchl like "rape" in those days - nor would anyone make the association. "Rape" would have been pronounced as "raap", a completely different vowel (no diphtongs), and in any case it would have been much too vague a word to use for a specifically sexual context - back then it meant to abduct, first and foremost. The word they would have used back then, where modern English prefers "rape", was "ravish". Words like "defile" and "violate" would also have been more specific to the act than "rape". Moreover, the context doesn't really allow for a sexual innuendo. Not only does it not fit with the rest of the scene, which plainly is about the passage of time, but consider this as well: It isn't the fool himself reciting these words, but Jaques, _quoting_ the fool, and then commenting on the fool's words as moralising on time. If the punchline was somehow sexual, it is deflated by everything that follows it.

That was wonderful thank you. I think nearly anyone who has read shakespeare modernized realizes that there must be jokes that are lost because things dont quite fit and dont quite rhyme, so its very noticable.

Father and son are both good communicators. Totally irrelevant but Ben Crystal is quite the dish.
