My thought on how these manufacturers of these aftermarket brakes are recommending how to size brakes on the front and rear of the car is, that the idea of using smaller brakes on the front seems like a leftover idea from the bracket days of everyone running a 14x32 in the back with a 2 or 3-inch skinny in the front. (I know they also use weight as a justification now) In that example set up from years ago, yes if you applied any substantial amount of braking effort to the front tires, all you'd do is lock them up. So you have to stop with the big 14 inch tire in the back. Although those cars still exist, a lot of cars are dual purpose and, as such, use a much closer to stock width tire in the front such as a 5 or 6 inch wide, while the rear tires have gotten smaller as tire technology has gotten better. So what used to be 14-inch wide rear tires have turned into 9 or 10-inch wide tire. It has become a lot harder to lock the front and a lot easier to lock the rear in recent years. There are a lot of factors that should be taken into consideration as every car and set up will act differently, which is where the adjustable proportioning valve comes in handy, but it can't completely cure an unbalanced set up, if you need more than what can be produced at a reasonable brake pressure for the rear, by using too small brake setup on the front, which again is where the weight goes during braking. Now my thoughts on why your brother may have hit the brakes as hard as he did the second time, which I don't believe to be any fault of his own per say. I have f3 tbms on the front of my car with stock 12 bolt drums in the rear. There are instances where I have excessive pad knock back occur where the first time I hit the brakes, it takes 4 to 6 inches of pedal travel to get brake pressure. When they were new, it happened a lot, but as they are seated in now, it only usually happens after the car sits a while. However, if the first time he hit the brakes, it took a lot of pedal travel to build pressure. He may have gone for another pump of the brakes, and if he expected to have the same 4-6 inches of travel and got 2 inches instead, it would explain hitting the brakes so hard the second time.

I really appreciate the time you spent to type out a well thought out response. I agree with everything you typed. I can remember putting these brakes on thinking to myself "these are too small". The weight differential between the wheel/tire combo front to rear is nowhere what a pro-mod might be...or even the turn-of-the-century bracket machine. I drove the car a bunch and spent some time with the adjustable proportioning valve, plenty of aggressive stops, - I even remember thinking the car stopped really good for the amount of brake pressure being generated. I've got a balance bar equipped pedal assembly in the new car now, I plan on installing pressure sensors front and rear and taking a deep dive...I can't help myself...lol

A lot of cars run rear brakes only though. Dragsters, altered's gassers ect .
@funkhouserracecars
@funkhouserracecars 2 күн бұрын
thats 100% correct. altereds, dragsters (RED,FED) i would consider outisde of the conversation due to the absurb dimensions and engine locations. Given the massive distance differences the engines reside from front axle centerline. Also, a 4 wheel brake car stops easier then a 2 wheel brake RED, at least in my experience driving them. I believe this car would have been better suited with larger front brakes then rear. Thanks for watchin and leavin a comment!

@@funkhouserracecars I run a dual master with balance bar in mine and if you have too much bias towards the front the car gets super scary ( kinda like pulling a trailer without trailer brakes) . Too much bias towards the rear takes longer to slow down but it stays straight as an arrow during braking even from 160mph .. I run a 1" bore to the rear and 7/8 to the front so the front has higher pressure but less volume than the rear. My balance bar is set pretty close to centered .
@funkhouserracecars
@funkhouserracecars 2 күн бұрын
@@petemcpeterson6205ive never experienced a scary feeling with too much front brake. Ive played with the balance bar stuff before, and understand being able to move it around. Front tires skid, the car pushes, rear tires skid and it has a high probability of swapping ends. Thanks for sharing.

@@funkhouserracecars no sir. I really haven't had a lot of brake issues so I played with it until it felt good and it's stayed the same for the last 6 years or so.. I did have a rear line get pinched though so only front brakes worked and it was all over the place . The one and only time I felt like the chute saved the car.

My car would lock the front brakes up and had really bad brake fade. In my case it was the proportion valve was adjusted incorrectly. How do you tig weld the back side of some of these joints?
@funkhouserracecars
@funkhouserracecars 11 күн бұрын
You can weld about 95% of it. The ceiling stuff is no issue, drop it through the floor for access to the top. The main hoop can be 100% welded outside the car, the front hoop, dash, and sunvisor bar can be 100% welded outside the car. The rocker bars are elevated enough to get around with some effort and a small cup. Its still some effort..thats no doubt
