Hi Mike, A brilliant summary. The improvement when sleeping makes such a difference. Also agree regarding bolder decisions. Amazingly I'm coming up to 4 years with the T:Slim so have to decide on my next pump. Logically it will probably be another T:Slim though I'd love to play with the CamAPS system!

I found that if I laid down a sheet of Tegaderm first, then placed the sensor, followed by more Tegaderm I avoided irritation.

Hello Mike. That’s for the very informative video. Quick question does the Guardian Connect work with the 640G pump also ? I’m would like to have my readings show on my iPhone via the App but also have the information fed to the 640G pump with smart guard. Hope the above makes sense 👍🏻

Hi Tony, Thanks for your comment. Unfortunately the Guardian Connect doesn't link with any of the Medtronic pumps (in the case of the MM640G it's down to the frequency and protocol of wireless communication which isn't Bluetooth on the pump, but IS to get it to talk to your iPhone). There are more details in the accompanying blog post www.everydayupsanddowns.co.uk/2017/05/medtronic-guardian-connect-review.html Frustrating huh!

Although I haven't got this pump (yet), several valid points are made. The pump is ugly, large and Medtronic seem to have a knack of irritating users. The 554G is a great pump , but....... it can be quite persistent with the alarms, the sensor can be laborious with the sensor tape ( I get redness/ stains too) and it is not the first time that I had to throw away a brand new sensor due to problems (last time was, actually, this morning..!!). I cant understand why the sensor cant be like the fresstyle libre....

Pro Tip: After you prime the Inserter, reach in and pull the covering off the adhesive before you attach the sensor. Doing this, it is already stuck to your skin and you won’t have to fish it out and risk pulling the probe out of your belly.

I don't think you're nit-picking at all. To do a high correction...after the meter automatically sends over my BG...it takes a minimum of 12 button presses to get a correction bolus going. That's absolute rubbish. I want to punch the UI programmer in the balls.

Really loved this review! Im waiting for this pump to arrive and Ive actually looked at it in hand when I went to see my endo and these things was things I pointed out directly and asked my endo "why oh why did they do that " and she doesnt understand why Im annoyed by things like this. Unfortunately the pump market has lost Animas since you did this video. So now I dont have much to chose from. Apparently Tandem is coming to Sweden/UK soon, maybe I shall wait for that instead. I've been a pump user for 16 years now and every time I try a new pump I ask myself, why dont they ask us(I say us because I guess you are one of them too from seeing this review) senior pump users for inputs before they release to market?!

What's the point of using the 640g if you don't use the sensor

Hello! I'm going to try this device in a few days. I have a question - does the pairing (Bluetooth) eat the battery a lot (iPhone, iPod, iPad...)? Thank you for the informative video, much appreciated.

Hello Linda Thanks for your comment. My experience was that there was a slight extra drain for the battery life, but that it was still very workable. I tend to be a bit of a power-miser with my iPhone and turn off many things that typically drain battery life (eg I keep the screen brightness down, turn off amlost all push notifications, only have wifi active in use etc). I'd only had bluetooth switched on since I started using a fitness tracker earlier in the year so that was not an additional drain. I didn't specifically time it, but while I'd expect to get 2-2.5 days out of a battery charge normally I think I was getting more like 1.5-2 with the Guardian Connect. Of course part of this was the extra time I'd be checking my phone for the CGM! Hope that helps :) Mike

I'm so happy you made these videos! That issue with the clip would drive me crazy too. I always clip my Veo to the bottom of a nightshirt and not being able to do that would annoy me so much :( Thank you thank you thank you! I get to choose a new pump in a few months and your videos helps with making a choice :) By the way, I never experienced the battery issue you had with the Veo (ep1 8:46). The display of remainder of battery was very consistant and when I got the alarm that the battery is empty, I could still use it for a full day. (Also no sensor) Maybe it was just an issue with your pump? The first Veo I had was fine, til it fell that is, but the replacement had a very strong insuline smell to it. I contacted Medtronics but they said as long as it doesn't give an error in the testscreen, they can't replace it. So I guess each pump has its own 'personality'. Also, the beltclip broke several times while it was clipped, resulting in the pump falling and ripping out the infusionset :/ Have you had this issue with the MiniMed 640 and its weaker clip? (Sorry for the long story!)
@MikeEverydayupsanddowns
@MikeEverydayupsanddowns 7 жыл бұрын
Hello Ironhide Thanks for your message! Weirdly I had the same battery-indicator on both Veo pumps I had (one was replaced after a casing crack). I never worried though - as you say there was a decent amount of time left even when the low battery alert sounded (as there is with the MM640G). I haven't had any problems with the clip on the Veo or MM640G snapping, though I know that several people have with the MM640G because Medtronic sent a couple of spare clips after I'd had the pump for a few months saying that they'd had reports of problems. I'm still using the first clip mine came with and apart from the weak spring it's fine. I just have learned to clip the pump so that there is always an edge to hang on to - eg around the neck of a t-shirt or similar.

Hey Mike have you had many pump failures or problems with calling medtronic etc?
@MikeEverydayupsanddowns
@MikeEverydayupsanddowns 7 жыл бұрын
Nope. I've never had a problem with a Medtronic pump at all. I did have a small crack appear on my old Veo by the battery compartment, but it never affected the functionality of the pump. I called Medtronic and they shipped me a new one under the contract with the NHS in the UK.

Cmon, it's expensive but it's not out of reach for the government, they could afford it, if ministers took a bit of a pay cut we could have better health care.
@MikeEverydayupsanddowns
@MikeEverydayupsanddowns 7 жыл бұрын
It's tricky because there's only so much cash to go around in the NHS so they have to make really tough decisions on which very expensive treatments make the most difference to people. As the device companies begin to publish better and better data from research trials for these devices, showing real benefit to people's health and quality of life, it will become easier to make the argument that CGM should be funded for more people.

Hi Mike, regarding your low glucose levels, have you ever considered one infusion set works better then the next or the last? I think I suffer from scar tissue and some infusion sites will be inconsistent creating difficulty. I tend to over compensate thus creating lows. I am still using an old Medtronic, I'm due to upgrade. I like your series of videos.
@mikek7838

Thanks for your comment lehighcap. Yes I certainly have had issues with infusion sets in the past when I was using Quicksets. I changed to the angled Silhouettes and have recently tried Mio 30s, both of which seem to work really well for me. Having said that most of my problems with sets were indicated by high BGs that responded once the set was swapped out for a new one. Your situation sounds very tricky. I wonder if you could try some alternative sites to give the scarred areas a rest for a year or two? I know someone on a forum who has to avoid whole areas because of problematic absorption. Insulin that seems not to work at all (getting locked in scar tissue) then suddenly all releases days or weeks later. Really difficult.
