It’s beyond me that people think Sutherland sucked. Idc how iconic hayter is. This shows what a high caliber actor is compared to a type casted voice actor. I grew up on mgs, no hate here. The absolute lack of narrative for an mgs game was the worst. Sutherland not having more dialogue is a close second.

I played this title and finished it foe the first time a month ago. Game was made nine years ago.. My cat passed away due to cancer this month. A week or so ago. And with some of her ashes I had her made into a beautiful glass bead in her eye color. Now I take her with me wherever I go. And this scene I reflect on because it hits harder now than ever before. I loved my cat as she was a daughter to me. Rest easy captain. Mamu. Meowpers. I will always be with you. You are a diamond. You were always our family.

“But if I reach out there to hold you, every part that is real disappears as I become more present now.” Reminds me of when someone dies and you think to tell them of something they would find funny or would find cool. So you pick up a phone to call them only to remember they’re gone.

I recently replayed the game for the first time in 9 years. I loved it when it came out for its gameplay but felt the story was pretty lacklustre. I completely changed my tone on it the second time around, and ESPECIALLY this scene. I think it just hits harder knowing that Venom is essentially gaslit into thinking he's Big Boss. There are so many moments where its clear his confidence in himself isn't what it should be and he relies of Ocelot and Miller to pump up his legend. But by this point in the game, Venom's confidence in himself as BB has crescendoed. Him smearing the ashes on his face, it's Venom's idea of what the real BB would do, at least subconsciously. It's weird, but it's in devotion to his fallen soldiers, so it circles back around to being so fucking cool and metal. Great fuckin' game.

Kiefer Sutherland’s performance is poignant and really human, I think he delivers something that David Hayter couldn’t.
