I have seen very few of these machines with photos on the buttons which would help a lot. Most of the time, there are just works written in Japanese.

It might depend on the area. This particular video was originally filmed in Asakusa, where there are heaps of foreign visitors. I've seen more of these photo-button style vending machines (or even ones with touchscreens) in touristy areas, but it's possible text-only ones still reign supreme. Be sure to have Google Translate or a similar app installed just in case!
