Great guitar! I had to laugh with your comments about your old guitar and case smelling like cigarette smoke. I remember one place I played, back in the day, where the smoke was so heavy it looked like a fog coming in from the coast. All of my equipment and clothing stunk of cigarettes. I had to go outside for fresh air during breaks to get away from the stink. -Those were the good old days.

Try this experiment and bet it'll answer your question (to an extent). Take your brightest SG and your Darkest SG. Swap ALL electrics, pots, caps, wiring and Pickups. Swap between booth guitars and see if the darkest sounding SG is still the darkest and Brightest is the brightest. This will show you if the pickups and all the wiring makes the sound difference more than the wood. Try it and you may be surprised. BTW simply swapping the PUPs will not work in the same way. To really make sure about the wood may want to swap tailpiece and bridge too (only if they fit). Cheers

The be all end all observation is the guitar that SRV played and made his number one and in the way it sounds in HIS hands , none of us could play that guitar and make it sound like SRV. EVHs Frankensttat sounds great for Eddie and it would not sound like EVH in SRVs hands….. Tone and sound are perceptions by the person playing it and the person hearing it…. The difference of which guitar is the best sounding is purely in the hands of the player for what they perceive but also the audience and listener can hear something and love it and not even play guitar or know the difference between a real 59 Les Paul or a real 59 Strat….. what makes a player play best is NOT vintage anything…. SRV and EVHs guitar made them sound great for them and were it had been a 1959 Les Paul then maybe this would verify it but we did not see either just play a 1959 Les Paul only….. tone and sound is so subjective and in the hands of all of us…. That is the fact

Great video. My uneducated opinion on what I consider vintage is Strats and Teles- anything pre 1975 as they were mostly super heavy and undesirable after 1975, Gibsons- pre 1970, and Martin guitars pre 1969 when Brazilian was used regularly on fingerboards and back and sides. I just can't wrap my brain around "vintage" in the 1980's most likely because it makes me feel old!

I'm not the "vintage" police or anything, but most people who play, buy, and sell "vintage" gear would not consider a 1980 Les Paul to be vintage. It seems as though the devout old school vintage guys don't consider most post-1965 (give or take a couple years) guitars to be vintage and the less die-hards maybe give another decade at most. People listing their 80s and 90s guitars as "vintage" solely do it out of ignorance or for the sake of marketing/up-pricing with hopes of taking advantage over someone that doesn't know any better and is searching for a trendy toy to brag about.

Etymology of the word vintage. It is a word derived from the word wine. The word vintage was born in France and was used to refer to a certain year that produced a particularly good harvest. The word itself eliminates the fact that old means good. A Fender from the 70's or a Gibson from the 80's can be fantastic, great, but it is not vintage. I understand that there are people who want to "adjust" the meaning because they have tried or have an instrument from that time that is fantastic, but I'm sorry it's not vintage. To be so, not only does that particular instrument have to be exceptional for various reasons, but the entire production of that year has to be exceptional, for various reasons, materials, construction techniques, etc...

My 1st guitar was a 1930s pulled from a trash pile in the 70s. I have had hundreds of guitars. Many USA vintage. After learning that 50'60' era combo of metals where strings meet wood can improve sound. I have tried it on a few Gibson made and a few Cheaper/newer guitars. All sounded/played much better. SD Pickups channel is where I got the idea/info. It was IMHO more the combo of parts that made them great. Not the year. 60s - Today Gibsons that do not have same metals do NOT sustain or feel the same
