This was beautiful, and was the first performance of this song I had seen. I assumed it would be the best, but then I went to go watch Glen Close's rendition, and that by far blew this out of the water. Close's performace FELT like I was watching Norma Desmond sing this song from the film. I did not get that from Lupone. Funny thing is I had first watched Madonna's Evita, and then I had seen the original revival of Evita in the early 2010s twice (once by original revival star and then by my good friend in the role who was an understudy in the show), but then I watched a few videos of Lupone's Evita, and THAT felt like a performace I had never seen of the Character...and one that was far superior to anything I had ever seen. But with that being said...at least from this one song...Close was channeling Gloria Swanson when singing this song.

Oh wow, this is amazing. Patti Lupone is a powerhouse and to she her go from a vulnerable recluse to a driven star is incredible. I love how DeMille appears like a ghost at the end and she leans upon him.

The more we see n hear other singers. Patti isn't what SHE Thought she was. She a screamer. A very Ugly disposition 4 sure. No big deal.

This is the pre- London ‘try out’. I saw the original London production with Patti. She was unfortunately undermined by a rushed, under developed production with a lame finale. The American production team improved it beyond comparison but by then the London show was temporarily closed and Patti replaced by Glenn in LA and Betty Buckley in London when it re opened. A very unfortunate time in Patti’s career. Everyone has their favourite Norma and mine is without doubt Betty who captured the sensuality of silent film stars - the way she walked and moved and the body language. Vocally, Betty was sensational. Glenn, for me, was too ghoulish, which was even worse when she revived her performance years later - a big mistake in my view. In the original movie, Gloria Swanson was not completely insane, whereas Glenn was. Thank you for up loading this - it brings back many wonderful memories.

While she can outsing Glenn any given day, she lacks the look and bearing you would imagine when you think of Norma Desmond - the fading, reclusive, silent star. She doesn't appear tormented enough to carry the role into fullness. Glenn, on the other hand, had everyone gagged the moment the flicker in her bewildered eyes cut through the camera. Glenn played it hauntingly that you couldn't get your eyes off of her. Nicole in the revival, however. is on another level. Her performance is non-pareil.

Patty is so sweet and warm here. I saw Betty Buckley in this role on Broadway. You could really see the inner flapper that she had been in California. Very specific choices, as well. Every star blesses us in their own special way.

Patti doesn’t look too great in this. It looks aged and miss cast although a beautiful voice she would know too she can get this one right

I was there. Heard the whole run through. It was pretty excruciating. He really had awful timing and the cast was ready to move into the theatre and sing with the orchestra. There is no way he could have sung the whole show with orchestra in time for opening night. Maybe if he’d had a further 6 months intensive training, but you either have timing or you don’t. Roger didn’t. He was a darling man and retreated so graciously from the show. Not his fault. He hardly needed the publicity or the money. He was persuaded by ALW that he could do it. Andrew saw the “bums on seats” potential of having Roger’s name on the marquee, which, if he could carry a musical, made huge sense. He couldn’t …..

It's a beautiful performance but it's a rather uninspired interpretation of this character. The song isn't meant to be poignant, it's meant to provide a glimpse into the desperation and delusion of Norma Desmond. Lovely but totally wrong.

Sorry, I think Ms. Lupone was dreadfully miscast. She was too young to portray a forgotten silent film star, she sang to perfection but lacked any emotion whatsoever. She wasn't experiencing a long denied dream come true, replete with the over the top expressions and movements that made her a star. She simply stood there and sang a song. Even though she won her breach of contract suit, the production was better served by her replacement.

Regardless of what you think of Patti Lupone, what Andrew Lloyd Webber did to her in this production was underhand, cowardly and vile. Not to mention HUGELY unprofessional and insulting. I don’t care who you are - the choice he made and the way she was left to find out about it was so disrespectful and I’m glad she sued and won.

Tonight I have watched Betty Buckley Patti of course and Glenn and I have to say I think the two for mentioned women have something the other lacks. Patti is far too young for the role but sings amazing, Glenn acts the hell out of it but doesn't quite have the chops. I just watched Betty Buckley and it was one of the most amazing performances I've ever seen in my entire life. She sings better in my opinion than Patty but has the maturity the role requires. Betty Buckley is it for me in this role.
@deshaunx776Ай бұрын
Finally, a reasonable assessment. I prefer Patti's take, but I can see how Betty could your favorite. Her performance was a mix of Glenn's version of the character with a stronger belt, like Patti had. I prefer Patti's fuller voice with its smoother vibrato and wider range. Betty definitely gives a balanced performance of the role. I'd say the age thing is in your head though. All 3 actress are within 2 years of each other's age, and Norma Desmond was only about 50 years old.

In my opinion, Aspects of Love was the very best of Andrew Lloyd Webber. I saw it in London, and i have the 2 CD's of the original cast. Every time I hear the music I have shivers all over my body and I've listened to it very often. Now I'm an "ole lady" of 80 and, OMG I wish I could see it again (or even pieces of it)!!!
