It's 2023, and I'm currently going through this procedure. I had my right leg repaired in late January, and my left leg repaired, 8 weeks later, in late Mar. I'm a 59 year old male, still very athletic, very fit, and in shape. I trained hard prior to the first surgery, in an effort to get myself as strong as possible. My surgeon used the Tomofix plates shown in this video. Both of my legs are now 1"/2.5cm longer. The process was supposed to take approximately 8 months (2 surgeries and the recovery time in order to just be able to be weight bearing and off crutches), but I completed it, and ran for the first time, at 90 days from the date of the first surgery in Jan. The openings in my Tibias were 18mm (almost 3/4") and bone from the iliac crest of my pelvis on both sides, was placed in the opening as a bone graft. Through the prior training, doing my own PT during the recovery processes, and going back to training on a mountain bike during weeks 6 and 7 of the first surgery, and eating/supplementing in a way that would benefit bone growth, I greatly sped up the recovery process. It is currently exactly 6 months since my first surgery, and I am 100% back to normal. I can ride my mountain bike just as hard, and aggressive, and for the same distances, as I did prior to the surgeries, I can run a mile on a track, and I can run 3-4 miles on steep mountain trails. I can also "power walk" a hilly 3-1/2 mile loop, on pavement (which I've just added to my training and PT routine).
