La verdad a menudo se encuentra ante nosotros desde el principio, tan fácil de ver, una maraña de hilos disfrazados de misterio. Los Irons ofrecen un sencillo que es brillante, curioso y, en última instancia, muy divertido. Es un blanco en movimiento con flechas hundidas profundamente en la diana. Confiado en su narración y atmósfera visual, el video de "Dios, espero que mi amigo no sea un espía" se siente como lo que pasaría si viertes café en tu computadora con "Sunset Boulevard" de Wilder abierto en una pestaña y "La conversación" de Copola abierto en otro. Con un excelente uso de la pantalla dividida, la actuación ecuánime de Caleb Tippit contrasta perfectamente con la ansiosa búsqueda de respuestas de Will Tabor. Si bien es amigo de la banda, Tabor no es miembro. Su inclusión en el video junto con la ausencia de los otros cuatro Irons ejemplifica aún más la forma en que aquellos que creemos que conocemos pueden aparecer repentinamente como algo completamente diferente. Desde una perspectiva estética, los elementos que merecen reconocimiento van desde primeros planos azotados por una honda hasta el intrincado diseño de producción de los años 70 y la curvilínea barba de Tippit. Sentí como si hubiera quitado el papel tapiz de la fiesta en el jardín del pasado de Estados Unidos, y detrás del marco de madera de la casa yacía un viejo bote de película cubierto de polvo. La canción concluye sonando al revés, un excelente recordatorio de que el comienzo está justo frente a ti, esperando que lo vuelvas a ver.
