I love this author. This is the 2nd story I've read of his where the main character is an older woman with an adoring younger beau.I like the way he shows the inner beauty of the women and doesn't allow them to be made a fool of. Excellant stuff.

Somerset Maugham was such an acute observer of human nature. His stories always have a surprising twist at the end.

Ms. Tower is the type of hateful character I've dealt with all my life. Always hoping for and waiting for a happy woman to fail. Wouldn't the world be better if we lifted each other up instead?

..The problem of Mrs Tower is that she does not know her value and her strengths. But we know every body has a value, we need only to see it, accept it and shine too)..💖

This poohbah of a writer was obsessed with women's age and appearance and considered himself such a catch at any age but his own skin was so much like a reptile's that he was nick-named lizard not only for that but for his other characteristics as well.
