I worked for Planned Maintenance Engineering (P M E) as a mobile engineer for a while when Kirton was home to Rapier Barracks. I had to go to Kirton sporadically to cover absences from the resident P M E team. All the buildings were in good order at the time and the married quarters were outside the security fence across the road. Further married quarters were located at Hemswell. The Hemswell quarters enjoyed gas fired central heating but Kirton had storage heaters. Our base at Kirton was a portakabin next to the coal fired boiler house yard. Most of the P M E tasks were routine maintenance plus repairs of barrack damage following squaddies getting boisterous. I had "new eyes" to the equipment and I recall one of the fuel storage bunds had a semi rotary hand pump to remove rainwater. Every month someone would use an electric submersible pump to remove the water followed by oiling the semi rotary and giving it a few strokes to ensure it's availability in case of emergency. All very good except it had been installed upside down years before and anyone familiar with the things would know it could never work like that. When I pointed this out there were a lot of red faces up the chain of command. There were many more similar stories of equipment being maintained for years despite being patently wrong. 😎

The MoD spent thousands fitting new ladders and guard rails to the tower, they claimed the work was justified as the structure was used for training. Recently the MoD spent thousands having the tower demolished.
