Excellent video! Would love to see more leather content if time permits for ya. Couple questions that myself and I'm sure others watching, may have: 1. Hose water - did you just run it mildly from the end of a hose or did you use a spray head with pressure? 2. What kind of leather oil do you use/recommend to recondition the leather? Doing the leather community a solid with this one!
@johnbaker30826 ай бұрын
Thanks for the kind words. As for the washing of the shaving cream off I just use my thumb over the end of a garden hose to make it spray with a little more pressure then an open hose. But is you had a mop sink in your house or shop that you did mind if it get stained a little bit just the water coming out the faucet would be good enough. For the oil I use to use extra virgin olive oil but I have made the move to Neatsfoot oil because it darkens the leather a little giving it a warmer glow. Either one works well and I still use the olive oil on things I want to be a lighter color when oiled. And for after care I use and sale my own blend of olive oil and beeswax because it has less a darkening effect and is all natural.

Try a deeper watering instead of just the surface which will dry back out within a couple hours. Mulch will also keep the moisture in.

You know what they say though, there isn't a single design that hasn't been done before. Originality is kind of a misnomer in this type of work especially when speaking in terms of "western/sheridan style floral carving" i mean look at the simple basketweave stamp, one of the most used patterns but no one has ever denied that it hasnt been done before lol Great video though, it helps give a different perspective on things!

Saw one of these done by a different guy and he took the branding off the bowl and I was peeved, because now it didn’t look like a bowling ball anymore. Plus his dint have any holes because it was new out of the box. So being dissatisfied with his lack of vision for the opportunity to do it the way I would I sought more bowling ball turning vids and found yours. Then you did such a perfect job my dissatisfactions were transformed into deep satisfied tingly brain feelings. Thanks brother. Liked and subbed.

I enjoyed your video. Your pen turned out great. I noticed that you keep putting a protector between the pen part and your pen press. I put a piece of furniture felt on that part of my press so I wouldn't have to worry about that ever again. You can see the felt at the 12:00 minute mark of this video I made: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kJPUYZaZe72iZpY You can see the basic felt used at this link: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01HA3BP0S?pf_rd_p=faa1d3e1-fadf-4279-ac2d-3096206e4690&pf_rd_r=FS0DQ6T67N2WDKHSG3EH Have a great day.

Very nice video. You handle that skew with perfection !! I have yet to master the skew, probably need a better one than I have. Looked like you were using a spindle gouge a lot also, what size? do you always use spindle gouge instead of a bowl gouge? You should post this video in our group ...woodturningbasics ....should help a lot of folks. Thanks Scott
@johnbaker30826 жыл бұрын
Scott I use a 3/8 spindle gouge and on boxes o find the wings of the bowl gouge get in my way. As for the skew watch Alan Batty's video on skews it helped me tons. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gZfIfXR-hriVp80 I'm no pro my any means I just want to share my spin go things. This is good for a general idea of how to turn boxes but a class is still the best way to learn.
@scottparat6 жыл бұрын
Thanks John ....good stuff. Do you have a preference on your traditional tools ....looks like you are using either woodcraft or rockler ....I forgot who makes woodriver (sp)? Also, I agree with you regarding bowl gouges and wings....its just that I always heard not to use spindle gouge on end grain or any type of bowl turning .....not sure why, just a lot of turners will tell you not to do it. I think part of the confusion comes from how one determines exactly what is a spindle gouge ...and then there are so many variations of spindle gouge. Anyway, thanks for answering and thanks for posting your video in the group ....gonna subscribe to your channel ....so keep those vids coming :)

There from woodcraft as I have one in my town. I buy that brand because of the low price for good high-speed steel. Yo be honest I don't like the feel of the handles and will turn my own to rehandle that one day. Most likely out of black walnut with bees wax finish. As for a spindle gouge in end grain, this is how I was tought in the box turning class I went to and all in the books of Richard Rafflan ( hope I spelled that right ) that I have read. I'm using a true spindle gouge made of a solid piece of round steel and not a roughing out gouge (rog) witch is made from flat bar that has been rolled in the a gouge. A rog should never be used when cutting in to end grain as it will catch and bend or even worse brake and send pieces of steel flying. Also a rog or sometimes called a spindle roughing gouge should never be used in face turning we're end and long grain will be coming at the tool. And thanks for the sub, plus feel free to share this video as much as you like and as always be safe out there
