As a native Maine lobsterman, I can say that every other fisherman I've worked with or met, refers to the contiguous part of the state as the main land, and the old timers still occasionally say "I've gotta' get back to Maine" before they go back inland. That said, id consider that to be the most realistic/plausible origin.

You think we have it bad? Take a look at the British. What is and isn't a 'city' is completely arbitrary over there. It's literally just what the king says is or isn't a city for any arbitrary reason he wants with any arbitrary boundaries he wants. A lot of what we would call cities aren't actually cities and a lot of their actual cities are a small subset of what we think of as a city here too. For instance, the city of london is a tiny little place with an area of about a square mile.

Nice video. Thanks. But kike Wyoming, few people of color. Definite plus for some folks, especially now with woke weaponizing of anti white racism.

I must add here, after watching the section on English ancestry, that I probably have a lot more English ancestry than German ancestry, since not only my mother's family (mother's maiden name Rice, grandmother's maiden name Robertson) is of English ancestry, but also my paternal grandmother's (maiden name Knott). It's just that non-Hispanic white Americans whose families have been in the U.S. for more than one or two generations, while probably of mostly English ancestry, tend to think of themselves as "non-ethnic" and don't think much about their English ancestry. Also, due to patriarchy, people tend to focus more on the ancestry of their father's family than their mother's. So that I have my father's German last name, while being more of English ancestry than German.

Thanks for talking about the history of German immigration to the U.S. My great-great grandfather, Reinholt Hennig, brought his family over from Germany to the U.S. in the 1870s, and got a farm in South Dakota through the Homestead Act. My great grandfather, Karl Hennig, made a family rule during World War I that "from now on, this family speaks only English". This was to avoid the persecution of German Americans that was going on at the time. This meant that by the time I was born, the only remaining vestige of my family's German heritage (besides the name Hennig), was that my dad called coffee cake "kaffee kuchen."

In U.S history V.A is one of the most important states that had the most important rolls of this country becoming the country that nobody appreciates any more and it seems like everything is going to shit because of a fight for the right that defeats the wrong from being what we exactly is what they fault for to avoid the present we now face and will definitely be the reason why the people and knowledge that's taught will eventually destroy this country and begin a new world order as the world will fight again to prove that history needs to for the better this time and I'm sure it will be the last

This is yet more proof it didn’t take 1000’s of years to form each layer of the earth. They were all formed at the same time. When the thin top layer was washed away the layers under were easily washed away forming canyons. That means during the thousands of years those lower layers were supposedly being formed they would’ve just washed away and basically never formed. If you take a jar half filled with dirt and fill it with water. Then shake it up and set it on a table. The dirt will settle to the bottom in layers. That’s exactly what happened during the global flood. Layers of earth tell nothing about the age of the earth.

I live in Williamstown KY where the life size Ark is (literally 2 minutes away from my house) Williamstown sets right in the middle between Cincinnati and Lexington. I love KY and would never ever move to another state. I moved from Florence before living in Williamstown for 11 yrs now and I don't regret it. Lol Florence was starting to build up and was getting to crowded for me😂

The census bureau, I understand, has more than one additional factor, where do people work and others. This become critical in places like NJ because many of our ties are to NYC in the North and Phila in the south. Also in the use of population of the municipality as directly related to its size causes problems in places like NJ because in a state of 7800 s.m. we have over 550 municipalities, all incorporated and as such a part of the NYC or Phila can be classified as not urban when by any standard particularly LA area is urban because of geographic size of municipalities, the inverse of huge western counties. In NJ and RI where our population density is over 1k people per square mile (NJ now over 1300) and populations run as high as 60k (yes that is 60k) density needs to be a factor. Just some additional thoughts. It is not all about geography but also interaction.

It's interesting to see how similar problems take place around the world. The same thing happens in Europe, for example with Barcelona. The city municipality only has 1.6M people. The official metropolitan area only considers the immediately adjacent municipalities, so around 3M residents. Finally, the real urban area rises the number to 5M, the 3rd largest in the EU (according to Eurostat).

Because the Northeast US has so many ppl, it might be worthwhile to add another category. As someone from DC & northern va, it’s odd to think of NYC as mid Atlantic. You could split NYC, Jersey, southeeastern PA (Philly) & eastern Connecticut into their own category, maybe the tristate. Hartford and New Haven in eastern Conneticut are probably closer culturally to NYC than Boston. New Haven is right across the Long Island sound from Long Island. Baltimore and Philly are similar which is probably why you lumped everything together. I still to tend to think of NYC and Connecticut as northeastern, and Delaware, Md, and northern Virginia is mid Atlantic

I’ve long thought Austin would be more powerful if it could somehow break away from Texas. More powerful as in realizing its goals, as Austin has always been antithetical to the stereotypical Texas stuff. Consistently policies that have been democratically passed in Austin have later been overturned by the Texas lege. No reason for that, just cut us loose and let us do our own thing.

Thank you so much for bringing attention to what Ukrainians are facing. The war has been and still is absolutely brutal beyond any justice words could do. Keeping the attention on this crisis and donating what we can is one of the best ways we can support Ukraine in these dark times. Дай Боже здоров’я 🙏

Alabamian here who recently returned from a trip to Gulf Shores. I struck up conversations with maybe 8 or 9 different people who were also visiting, and none of them were from Alabama. I met people from Tennessee, Louisiana, Mississippi, Kentucky, Indiana, Missouri, Arkansas, and Kansas. I love the Alabama gulf coast and I would highly recommend it to anyone considering a visit. Were a very hospitable state and most of us welcome visitors with open arms.
