I hiked this trail several times in the 1980's and 90's. I'm 76 now and in reasonable shape, but my knees won't let me hike it again. Thanks so much for sharing your hike. Brings back wonderful memories!

There's definitely a fair amount of damage in the Pisgah ranger district. Nantahala national Forest is almost completely untouched though.

@@doarelectroni I've done some hiking in nantahala and the Pisgah ranger district in the last couple weeks and did some work in the grandfather ranger district yesterday. I haven't been to the Appalachian ranger district yet but grandfather was still pretty fucked yesterday and anything near a body of water will be in pretty bad shape for quite some time.

@@darlsbarkley3493 Thanks for letting me know. I had already come to the conclusion that it may be awhile before I make it out to those areas that got more damage from the storm. I’m happy that I already have made it out to some of those more popular places out in the Grandfather district many of times before so it would just be to maybe tick off the list some lesser known or less popular places in the future. Luckily we live in a big enough area that there’s still plenty of wooded tracts of land virtually untouched from the storm as you stated. Thanks.

Except that tourism is one of the largest sources of income in this part of the state. Virtually everyone in western NC and the coast of NC makes some portion of their money because of tourism. It's literally a multi billion dollar industry in western NC.

It's so sad. Best time of year for hiking - and there's NO hiking. Not unless you feel like driving all the way to Nantahala and the far western part of the state that didn't get hit as hard - and even many of those are closed. Since I can't hike, I'm looking for trail cleanup opportunities, but not sure where to find those.

@@luckyotter623 Most of the Smokies is open and most of Nantahala. The small mountain towns in the far western part of the state are stressing that they are open for business because they are worried people won’t come out of fear that everything is closed when they depend on the revenue from tourism. I’m planning a trip real soon probably to the Smokies.

I work for Pepsi so I’ve been real busy since the storm. Thanks for asking. I hope you’re doing well and didn’t have any damage.

@@doarelectroni You live right by me! I'm on the south side of 70 (the non-river side). No damage other than leaking through the backdoor. We both got lucky. Most of Swannanoa looks like a war zone. 😭 We just got our water back yesterday - but it's non-potable, so we still need to use bottled water for drinking and cooking.

@@dirthimself3265 I’ve got content to upload from before the hurricane and after I’ve just not had a good signal at the house or the time to upload. A lot of the hiking trails were severely damaged from the storm so as a result all of Pisgah National Forest is still closed and will probably be closed for an indeterminate amount of time however Nantahala and the Smokies among other places are open so if I make any new content that’s where I’m going. @@richf9608 The Mountains to Sea Trail from the Folk Art Center on the Parkway. Actually anywhere from 191 Brevard Rd to 70 is pretty easy without much of an incline compared to elsewhere.
