I hiked this trail several times in the 1980's and 90's. I'm 76 now and in reasonable shape, but my knees won't let me hike it again. Thanks so much for sharing your hike. Brings back wonderful memories!

@@doarelectroni I've done some hiking in nantahala and the Pisgah ranger district in the last couple weeks and did some work in the grandfather ranger district yesterday. @@darlsbarkley3493 Thanks for letting me know. I had already come to the conclusion that it may be awhile before I make it out to those areas that got more damage from the storm. I’m happy that I already have made it out to some of those more popular places out in the Grandfather district many of times before so it would just be to maybe tick off the list some lesser known or less popular places in the future. Luckily we live in a big enough area that there’s still plenty of wooded tracts of land virtually untouched from the storm as you stated. Thanks.

Except that tourism is one of the largest sources of income in this part of the state. Virtually everyone in western NC and the coast of NC makes some portion of their money because of tourism. It's literally a multi billion dollar industry in western NC.

It's so sad. Best time of year for hiking - and there's NO hiking. Not unless you feel like driving all the way to Nantahala and the far western part of the state that didn't get hit as hard - and even many of those are closed. @@luckyotter623 Most of the Smokies is open and most of Nantahala. The small mountain towns in the far western part of the state are stressing that they are open for business because they are worried people won’t come out of fear that everything is closed when they depend on the revenue from tourism.
