I beleive that If you delete Linux from dualboot single disk, you would just have to just run something like macrium reflect free, from a disk to a live cd session, ie boot into the disk or USB, and run "fix boot issues" (located in the left hand column once the macrium reflect reaches desktop environment)- this would reset windows to boot up with windows bootloader again. Great bit of software macrium, and free (free version still available online from major geeks- get it while it's still available) and I've cloned from a larger disk onto a smaller one with success, although I've had to run "bootfix" in Linux live cd session, and also run macrium reflect to get windows to boot too after doing the cloning. Kind of a pain, but it does work.

You are correct. Plenty of tools available to fix problems for sure. As long as you know what you've done to select the right tool. I'm sure I've reinstalled Windows and Linux many times when a tool such as the live CD/USB would have worked. Fixboot, reinstall GRUB etc. Cloning is very interesting technology, done a bit years ago with Norton Ghost, very cool. As frustrating as computers can be there's also that sense of YES when you finally figure it out! I've generally learned how far I can bend it before it breaks these days. Many a night up till 1-2AM reloading Windows and drivers...Or inserting the Linux Live CD/USB. Thanks for the well written and informative comment.

Dumb question, but if the disk you want to install Linux on is disk 0 (ie the first disk of the system). Can you still do it this way and change disk order in BIOS?
@2troke11 күн бұрын
“change disk order in BIOS?" If you mean disk BOOT order, yes that should work. Depending on your system, how many drives you have and so forth you may need to run ‘update GRUB’ so it can find each operating system. Not sure if some UEFI systems might have problem with that but I recently cloned my Linux Mint system from a SATA SSD to an NVMe drive, change boot order first boot device = NVMe, run sudo update-grub as the order of the other drives had changed. See here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pHyyaoCkiKyZfLs

Nice! Thanks for sharing! What kind of graphics card do you need for running Compiz? Will it work running as a virtual machine hosted on a proxmox server or will it be difficult to send all the keyboard / mouse events to the VDI machine? Seems like Compiz is dependent on X? What will happen when Wayland is rolled out "everywhere"? Will compiz disappear?
@2troke2 ай бұрын
The cube, expo, 3D windows and a few animations when minimising maximising etc will run just fine on integrated graphics. Some of the more advanced (animations plus and experimental) might slow things down. I've used Compiz on my old dual core laptop that has 2GB RAM. Use it on my daily driver Mint Box Mini PC (4 cores @ 1.6ghz ?? from 2015) and there's no visible lag or slow down. Most of the effects I show in my videos are NOT resource intensive. Seems to be a myth about Compiz being a resource pig. Turn it on (activate it) and see (test) for yourself on your own machine. Most of my Compiz videos are made using virtual machines (Virtualbox). I record my Host desktop and run the VM full screen. My host machine is running Compiz also! I have had some limitations on VM's, when rotating the desktop cube you can't go indefinitely as I can on my host (hardware install). That’s about the only difference I've noticed between virtual and hardware installs. I think Garuda Linux has a Wayland version of Compiz they are developing that I sampled a few years ago. Not sure what’ll happen with X vs Wayland thing. Maybe it'll be like the ‘year of the Linux desktop’ and never happen!

Hello Just want to thank you for your efforts you put in this tutorial. I was wondering why my grub bootloader isn't as sleek as yours. Should i update it or does it depend on the motherboard?
@2troke4 ай бұрын
Thanks for kind words. The GRUB menu at the start of the video is from Zorin OS, later on at around the 20 second mark you see Linux Mint GRUB menu from the ‘live’ session and at 6:38 it now has Linux Mint after it was installed over the top of Zorin OS although you are correct, the menu still looks like the Zorin one. I would guess that because Zorin’s GRUB was already on the drive, installing Linux Mint just overwrote where needed but kept Zorin’s GRUB menu theme. The video is over 4 years old now so I have no idea what the current Zorin GRUB looks like. Also UEFI systems, different motherboards , graphics cards and screens all play a part but I think I see what you're looking at, the Zorin theme. Not sure if reinstalling GRUB from a Zorin USB would change the theme or not as doing the opposite didn’t bring Linux Mint’s theme so you're on your own there. I installed Zorin first then changed it to Linux Mint in the video so you could do that but lots of work and no guarantee it'll work the same today as it did 4 years ago! I have used ‘Grub-customizer’ in the past to tweak my boot menus, change boot order, time out, OS names, fonts etc and I think you can add colours and more. Check out your distro’s software manager and see if its in there. All the KZbin ‘experts’ seem to dislike it but I never had any issues with it. I don’t use it now as I just want to get to my operating system these days however that Zorin GRUB theme does look slick.

At 6:25 in the video is shown how to put the boot loader on the Linux drive and NOT on the Windows drive. I recommend you unplug/remove the Windows drive during the installation of Linux for added safety if you're unsure then run sudo update-grub as shown at 30:20 in the video after Linux is installed and you've reconnected your Windows drive assuming you want to use the Linux system to boot into Windows. Alternatively you can choose what drive/system (Win/Linux) to boot from via the BIOS / UEFI each time you start the machine. My system is UEFI and this is how i do it.

It's very cool, just tried it on Fedora MATE, but this only customizes window decorations, controls inside windows and panels remain unchanged
@2troke5 ай бұрын
Correct. You can change other aspects of the system via the ‘Appearance’ module/button in the Control Centre, such as the general/system theme. If you click on the customise button you have fine tune options for Controls, Window Border, Icons and Pointer (mouse cursor). Right clicking the panel gives you options there. I would make a note of what you have currently before you start making changes so you can go back if you make a mess of things but that said have a play around until you find what you like. You can also download other themes and icons. There are other videos on my channel that cover much of this, or search KZbin for similar videos. Its a bit of work and effort (and fun) to finally get what you like but well worth it in the end. Very satisfying knowing you made it your own.

Can this cause long term issues such with updating a specific OS? I am looking into adding a Linux drive to my windows computer
@2troke6 ай бұрын
Long term? Maybe forgetting about the other system and accidentally overwriting its bootloader. I've heard many people claim that Windows updates will screw up the Linux system but the worst thing I've had is Windows changing the time and screwing up the Linux time until it updates its time again, frustrating but fairly harmless. Long term issues, I'd say no. I installed mine in 2016 and no problems. I just let Windows do its thing regarding updates. So long as you're aware during Linux updates upgrades etc, to NOT put GRUB on the Windows drive, as I've been, you shouldn’t have any problems.

Basically no, however I did try some years ago, but all sorts of unusual behaviours if memory serves correct. Cinnamon and Compiz are essentially doing the same job so conflicts are inevitable. Cinnamon has a better Expo mode than Compiz as far as I'm concerned and there is also a desktop cube as an extension so it can be made to do some of the things Compiz does.

@2troke9 ай бұрын
I'd leave it alone if its working. What operating system and version do you have? RTC is real time clock, the clock on the motherboard. TZ is time zone. So your RTC is likely in the same timezone as Universal time (GMT / UTC), while your operating system is displaying the local time-zone you are in.

@@mohamedihsanpr During my testing I discovered that a fresh install of Mint 21.3 Cinnamon/Mate/Xfce seemed to work out of the box. Whereas systems that upgraded to 21.3 from earlier versions 21.2 21.1 21.0 etc, had ntp removed but systemd-timesyncd wasn’t installed during the upgrade. It was most confusing why some systems worked while others didn’t until I realised this was happening. It might not be an exact science as to how each system behaves but that was the general theme I noticed. This would explain why my clock was ‘suddenly’ not tracking time. NTP might still work if it wasn’t removed during the upgrade. As to why fresh installs had systemd-timesyncd installed but not upgrades is likely the Mint team not forcing other software onto its users or an oversight. My Mint 20.3 system seemed to lose and gain with just ntp tracking time until I removed it and installed systemd-timesyncd, it is my most used system (daily driver) and I wasn’t checking how accurate it was time keeping, other than a cheap digital watch that seemed to lose then gain back some time over a few months which is what caused me to investigate what was going on. Today is February 29th so a leap year and my clocks are showing the correct date. In April we drop daylight savings so that will be the next real world test. My best guess is that ntp checks ‘occasionally’ and within a ballpark of accuracy compared to systemd-timesyncd. I read many forums, tested many virtual machines, pulled out much hair for a few weeks before it all started to make sense! Now all my systems seem to keep ‘exact’ time. They might show 0.2 seconds out when first booted up but after 10-30 seconds they sync to exact time as per time.is website. I would speculate that you upgraded to Mint 21.3 from an earlier version rather than did a fresh install? That would explain why systemd-timesyncd and ntp weren't installed according to my my findings! Thanks for getting back to me.

I take it you have to press a key (F12?) at start up if you want to choose Linux otherwise it boots straight into Windows? But you have to do this every time you start up and you would like to boot directly into the GRUB menu each time you start the machine and choose Windows or Linux from there? Go into the BIOS (UEFI) and make the drive with Linux on it the ‘first’ device/drive the machine boots from.

How to make two rows of workspaces on the bottom panel? don't think one can .. its easy in Xfce, and I use it all the time for organizing open data and code files, and command line windows.
@2troke9 ай бұрын
Easy in Mate also. Cinnamon, Right click the panel, applets, download tab at the top let it load for a moment, search for workspace, click on Workspace grid and 2D switcher, click install button on the right, go back to manage tab at the top, click on the new applet and the plus button at the bottom, click configure button and choose 2 columns and 2 rows, Style = Grid. It doesn’t give a preview that I can see but it saves panel space. There's also the option for ‘buttons’ with the default switcher and there might be other cinnamon spices option if you go to the spices website. There's also an 'Expo' applet that might be useful, shows up as dots on the panel and is shortcut to display expo mode, which I think in Cinnamon, is a great feature.
