That's a very innovative design and I respect your knowledge to create your own design. I was a sawfiler 33 years and have no idea how to design what you have done. That said I would encourage you to design a guard that will cover as much of the bands as possible but not interfere with cut or travel. A broken band could be very hazardous. It is an awesome design , Id love have something as I enjoy woodcrafting as a hobby. Hardwood and cedar I like to use is limited and very $$$". I often have access to logs or dead trees and that would be an option for me. Thanks

great video an good job on the build im probably going to copy this model can i ask did you use the 2” and 2.5” square stockon the mill because of strength or did you have the material to use im wondering if i could get by with a smaller size to save some cost thanks
@joshsbomber11 ай бұрын
Thank you
@joshsbomber11 ай бұрын
You want the finished product to be as strong as possible because there is quick a bit of tension on the blade. I would say build it as solid as possible, but able to fine tune adjust still. I would not use any smaller material or any thin walled tubing. Just my thoughts.
@noahstthomas333311 ай бұрын
thanks for your thoughts can i also ask how you attched the v casters to the bottom of the mill frame i see alot that are directly underneath but these are off set to the side do you like how it operates
@joshsbomber11 ай бұрын
I ran a bolt through the bottom rail and through the caster with a lock nut. The wheels just sit beside the bottom frame with a bolt through them. I think it took 3/4" bolts or maybe 5/8"

I see a couple additions to your machine. One for safety and that is a blade guard/retainer that will contain the blade if it breaks. The second one is some bristle brushes attached to the front and rear of the guide wheels that carries the motor blade assembly. That would keep your track clear of cuttings when attempting to move the cutting assembly forward or backward. Other than those items it looks really thought out and built. Wish I had your skills.
@joshsbomber Жыл бұрын
Appreciate the comments. I did build a guard at one point and ditched it when fine tuning, just never put it back on. I also ended up rebuilding the entire machine, making it taller and more solid. It was just about perfect when I sold it. Lol

Impressive build. Very good design/engineering and excellent execution. Roughly how much….including the blade, motor and everything else….did you spend on materials? Can’t imagine the amount of time this took but it must have been hugely satisfying when you did your 1st cut. Good job and good explanation. 👍🏼

Appreciate that. I had scraps and bought materials and also completely rebuilt it after this video, but with the knowledge I have now, plus building it better from the start, I'd be around $2000 and many hours of work.

Brilliant job on the build. One suggestion: if you use wooden pegs for the vertical supports, you avoid any chance of damaging your blades on them. Also if necessary they can be left higher, and you simply run through them

What's the width on this from track to track, very well done and very simple design, been studying this to replicate.
@joshsbomber Жыл бұрын
I cannot remember the width between rails. I want to say 35" maybe. Something to remember, is build it as narrow as the widest you'll ever need it. If you plan to cut huge trees, then build wide and tall. If you plan to cut smaller trees and resaw lumber, then build it smaller. When I build another one, it will be smaller. Reason being is that smaller is easier to align and tighten the band. Just food for thought.

Curious, what made the firs design underbuilt? I have 6" pallet racking from Lowes i plan on using. Its 1/16 wall but about 6" square. Having 2nd thoughts now.
@joshsbomber2 жыл бұрын
The pneumatic wheels gave a little more than I liked, not rigid enough. I went to cast wheels. As for the frame and carriage, 1/8" would be optimal. I'm not sure 1/16" would be strong enough, it seems it would warp with tension. I think those racks are hardened so that might be useful. I don't know. Also my tensioner was well underbuilt and needed redesign.
