Thank you so much for sharing your journey! 🌱 Your aquaponics food forest sounds absolutely amazing-so inspiring! I actually have a couple of aquaponics kits I haven’t unpacked since moving, and you’ve motivated me to finally dive into them. Building a DIY food forest in your own time is such a rewarding process, and it’s incredible that your first year was a success! Wishing you continued growth and success in your suburban oasis. Let’s keep learning and growing together!

I live on just less than an acre and have 10 chickens, 4 ducks, a rather large garden, 2 cats and a dog! We dont feel cramped at all and I wouldnt consider myself a farmer even though most of my family and friends joke that I am playing Farmville IRL. I am excited to see your journey! I think everyone should have chickens if they are able, they are so fun just to sit and watch and they give you breakfast every day :D

I have 4 clethra alnifolias, only 2 are big enough to bloom. but when they do, I go get a whiff every day just for the smiles. sorta like a North American jasmine. can't have too many! I planted 2 bottle brush buckeyes this year. one is pretty much shaded, and the other gets a lot of afternoon sun, and is pretty droopy by the end of the day. supposedly they can handle sun, but just won't grow as big. I just don't want it to die. would love an update on yours. I just went on call, so I feel your pain .. if only we could autoscale because we haven't done the dumbs
@urbangeekmomgardener7 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing your gardening adventures! Clethra alnifolias sound delightful - who wouldn’t want a daily dose of smiles? 😄 Bottle brush buckeyes can be a bit temperamental, can’t they? I’ll keep an eye on mine and definitely share updates. Fingers crossed for both of ours to thrive! And yes, autoscaling for plants would be a dream come true! 😂 Happy gardening and hang in there with the on-call life!

1 pot is getting too much sun and the other is getting the protection. Plant annuals. If you really want shrubs; then protect the base of the tree with annuals. Also, drip irrigation.

Haha you got this!!! Remember humans have a relationship with chickens that goes back thousands of years. ❤️ Your setup looks great! For the brooder panel, you may want to lower one side more so that they have a choice of how much heat to get. You're doing great!

Do you plan what you are going to do each day in your garden or do you just move by inspiration? Also, in Zone 7 can we grow lettuce in the summer? Is it too late to start? Full sun, partial sun or shade?
@urbangeekmomgardener8 ай бұрын
Ha! Me plan? No typically I go out in the morning and just observe. I never really know what I’ll do until I look around. I have loose plans to pot up plants or plant things recently purchased but otherwise not really. I do tend to move by inspiration. 😜

Right on! I gotta ask: was there a reason you went with the cattle panel method? I'm looking into the best methods for the Arguta I have growing, and it seems like this strat. is #1/2 along with what commercial growers use. "they" say Arguta like to grow in a twin-trunk fashion, which leads to comm. growers using 4x4 post with metal wires for the vines to grow up and across. Feel free to lemme know whatchya think, or not, I'll speak into the void for the Al Gore Rhythm
@urbangeekmomgardener8 ай бұрын
Honestly, we went with cattle panel due to price simplicity and longevity. I plan to prune my vines hard every year, so it should last for a while and I’m open to moving after a few years.

I'm sorry all of your plant babies got cooked! The good news is there are vent fans and heaters that work on thermostats to auto start at certain temperature thresholds. Having power out there should make a pretty easy upgrade (so jealous over here with no power). Consider investing in shade cloth, too. That house is going to start getting hot, hot, hot!

Sounds like you need your window on automatic temp opening, an exhaust fan and a solar fan. I just purchased 2 greenhouses and prepping for the build. But, due to me being in Maryland I just went online and ordered a few things. Opener/mister. Drip. And a diesel heater for winter. Temp gauges and of course fans. It’s hotter than 👿 here so I may order a shade screen to place over one. But I can’t even be out back but 5 hours preparing because of the bright sun and heat. The weather is crazy!!!
