You can start with lower weights, like common 2lb Indian clubs. I always recommend starting with lighter weight and working your way up. Using kettlebells, you get a similar feel - the feedback of the weight's pull against the body.

That's not unusual. You may need to do more regular stretching. Keep stretching your hamstrings and hip flexors and you should get there eventually.

First and foremost, only move within a comfortable range of motion. It takes consistent practice stretching to gain flexibility. So move only as far as is comfortable WITHOUT PAIN and hold the stretch for 30-60 seconds. It sounds like you very likely have tight hamstrings and should spend some time stretching them before attempting this exercise.
