Kim worst nightmare is ending up with fate of the Romanian Soviet President Nicolae Ceaușescu, will continue this later. Kim is threading a very fine line here. He knows there is a signficant benefit and risk of opening your economy up. Freedom can be as addictive as any drug and when your people have some of it they just want more. Mikhail Gorbachev did just that, he wanted to create Socialism with a human face. He wanted people more freedoms, less restrictions and he thought the people would be happy for him to provide improvement. But once the people got the improvements they wanted more and they started learning about the outside world. Once the dominos where starting to fall there was nothing to save the Soviet Union. This is when the Berlin Wall fell and this is when Romanian President Nicolae Ceaușescu and his wife was captured and was executed on live television by a military squad. This kind of image is what Kim is really scared off. Kim also doesn't have the amount of power that you think he has, he has to keep the hardline military generals happy or they might roll into to Pyonyong with their military forces and take over. If Kim changes to much then people around him with power might become unhappy and betray him. This is why he had an extended family member killed at the Kuala Lumpur Airport as he was one to challenge his power and undermine him. Also remember, kim had a strange childhood where he was kept inside a bunker complex and didn't see the sun until 6 years old. He couldn't interact with other children like normal children. Children was brought into him for playing at times but not for too long as they kept swapping the kids around so they wouldn't learn too much about the bunker and bring information out. This created a dynamic where the only attachment that he was able to make was with his body guards, they were always around him and they are to this very day his best friends.
