Interesting to hear this tempo, which is certainly more of what I was used to when I was younger. And oh gosh, it's hard to beat Walter Berry. And how thrilling to know that the whole performance is available on KZbin.

I return to this regularly, but not so much as it becomes stuck in my ear. The brilliance of Bach and the magnificence of Walter Berry's voice.

It's a fine voice, certainly, but why such a stiff and stodgy interpretation? This is a veritable masterpiece aria that finally begins to relieve the dramatic tension Bach has sustained to great effect for the preceding 63 sections. The text speaks of joy in rest and of Jesus entering the heart. This, and the implied brisker tempo, given the quarter notes in the violins and oboes da caccia, cries out for something at least a little more ecstatic and heartfelt, dance like. Where are the oboes, by the way? All I can hear is mooshy strings. This type of performance is dead, and actually rather arrogant, with its ignorance of Bach's intentions with regard to instrumentation and insistence on this awful, post-romantic stodge style.

It's a performance of it's time, which is why I love it. It takes me back to a time when this is how I would hear the Passion performed. I know it's not authentic, but it sounds beautiful to me and very evocative of my early days of listening to this piece. I love the timbre of Walter Berry. I'm also a fan of those whopping Messiahs from the 50s and 60s with the Mozartian twiddles and very little vocal ornamentation from the soloists. Inauthentic but still a glorious straightforward sound. It's good to hear classic interpretations from the past. And in even modern performances that claim authenticity, the fiddles can't stop themselves from deploying vibrato, which wasn't a thing in Bach's time.

Sang this as a soprano many ( 70) years ago at St Pauls cathedral in London as part of the special services choir. I took part every Easter for seven years as a boy. This was my favourite chorus. As soon as 'Moon and stars ' you felt the exitment rising. The St Matthew passion remains one of my favourites and I seek out performances wherever I can.

Always been conflicted between Berry, Fischer-Dieskau and Benjamin Luxon. But Berry owns it. Richter has been criticised for his pacing, but I think it is a perfect match for the contemplative text.

@@leodepuydt308 Pergolesi`s music ist so generic, predictible and boring. Bach music is so viel of Life and Hope. I don't say this all of greatest composer of all times recognized of wonderful Bach's music is, Wagner, Beethoven, Liszt, Schoshtakovich, Saint Sanez, Brahms, etc.

I always admire the elegance of Richter in conducting by heart the pieces, the way he moves his body, his arms, his hands, his fingers, it has a sculptural quality, even his face and looks when giving instructions is simply a joy to watch. The filming is also superb.

Perhaps the greatest of Bach’s PASSION arias for Bass. A close second may be BETRACHTE MEINE SEELE from the St. John Passion, a miniature gem that lasts less than 2 minutes. Berry & Franz Crass, IMO, are 2 of the best bass/baritone singers for Bach & sometimes were BOTH featured on recordings of these two Passions. What an embarrassment of riches to have them on the same recording. After years of listening I also find Quasthoff of equal stature & Hans Hotter’s ICH HABE GENUG is still my number one choice for this cantata. Nowadays there are many fine bass or baritone voices forcthis music & one I appreciate especially is William Sharp who many probably are unfamiliar with. That’s too bad since Sharp has a unique & beautiful instrument which is also immediately recognizable once heard initially. A fine musician as well. Back to Berry & Crass, here were unforgettable artists that are certainly missed these days. In the case of MACHE DICH… it is a pity that the wonderful accompanied recitative/arioso preceding it is not included here.

Great performance! One might say it isnt' really "historically accurate" ( no historical instruments, slower tempo, modern 440 Hz intonation instead of baroque 415 Hz ), but it is musically and artistically very beautiful, and that's what counts in the end.
