Horus Swift and Dark-sided Flycatcher have even been rarer in Europe.
@TheDutchBirder2 күн бұрын
@TheJacksnipe true, there are more species on the Dutch list that in absolute numbers are maybe rarer in a northwest European context, but most of them are a lot easier to see in the world. Future will tell if we get more spectacles eiders here or more african swifts...

Nice set up! But regarding your statement on Nikon and the 120fps 4K, I think the Nikon Z6 iii does that as well and costs half of the Z8 - but still a bit more than the a6700 :)
@TheDutchBirder3 күн бұрын
Yes true I forgot to tell about it. Also it doesn't have bird eye autofocus. But I haven't compared both systems so the AF could work equaly good in the field. Also the a6700 has a higher pixel density. 6k on a crop sensor vs 6k on a full frame sensor. For filming wildlife I prefer the extra crop above the ability to film full frame.

interesting to learn about canada goose not being countable in the netherlands i personally follow eBird for what i count and dont count only exception atm being muscovy duck altho i think next year i might remove it from my list but ive seen plenty of them in random fields not nearby any housing
@TheDutchBirder5 күн бұрын
It was countable for some years based on the fact that a Canada Goose ringed in Amerika had turned up in Europe. So the argument at that time was that we couldn't exclude a true wild Canada Goose in the Netherlands, but that decission has been overturned.

I wonder about a couple of things, whether it could still exists in places where they were not known to exist before? and where people wouldn't be vigilent of their presence. Secondly, imagine if an observation is deemed legitimate, i doubt a human intervention would really help. If it managed to survive, it just needs its habitat protected..
@TheDutchBirder14 күн бұрын
Well for a migratory species I doubt there could be any left. Maybe if there is a relict population of non migratory birds left than maybe, but if so that would be a true miracle. And the habitats need to be protected regardless
@VinsUplifting14 күн бұрын
@@TheDutchBirder Thank you for your answer. For a bird with known migratory path it seems unlikely indeed but i have heard some birds started stopping migrating like they used to (mostly due to climate change). The 2001 sighting in Hungary seemed legit and it was not a known habitat range... Siberia is also a very large place. I'm praying the species is hanging out somewhere.

How many species have been recorded in the Netherlands?
@TheDutchBirder16 күн бұрын
541 accepted. This would be 542, but there are some species currently being reviewed which have been seen earliër: Allen's Gallinule, Yellow-billed Kite and Pechora Pipit. But for all three there is a good chance they will be rejected.
@sampp4416 күн бұрын
@TheDutchBirder If all the species being reviewed get accepted Finland will have 495 species. In 2024 we got 4 new species and in 2023 3. Dont know if the bonapartes gull will be accepted, but the others are likely to be accepted in my eyes. Maybe well get to 500 soon😉

Up here in central finland even more quiet, other than fieldfares and waxwings nothing here.
@TheDutchBirder19 күн бұрын
@sampp44 Taiga Flycatcher would be a new species for the Netherlands so I would get very excited, even if it was the only rare bird for the entire winter. Is this year more quiet than other years?
@sampp4418 күн бұрын
@@TheDutchBirderIt was the 2nd one for Finland. The bufflehead and black winged kite would be 1st for Finland and the lesser scaup would be second. And I dont think there have ever been any twitchable storm-petrels. But maybe youre right, the winter here is just so long. There likely wont be many rarities found until the end of march. I definitely feel like there have been less minor rarities than usually.
